Sequoyahwasborninthe1770sandgrewupintheCherokee village of Tuskeegee, Tennessee.Hewasskilledatworkingwithsilverjewelry(首饰).OnedaySequoyahwasadvisedtoputhisnameonthesilverjewelryhemade.However,hecouldnotwritehisnamebecauseCherokeewasonlyaspokenlanguage.Sequoyahdecidedtolearnhowtowritehisname,soheaskedoneofhiscustomers(顾客)toteachhim,whoknewEnglishverywell.Fromthattimeon,Sequoyahsigned(签名)hisworkinEnglish.

ThenSequoyahrealizedthatawrittenlanguagewasnecessaryforhispeople.In1809,hestartedbymakingsmalldrawings,andthenheexperimentedwithcreatingaletterforeachsoundintheCherokeelanguage.First,SequoyahpickedoutallthesoundsintheCherokeelanguage.Thenhegaveeachsoundasymbol.UnlikeEnglish,however,notwosoundssharedthesamesymbol.

Sequoyah'sworkwasdifficultandtookhimalotoftime.Worse,thosearoundSequoyahdidn'tunderstandwhathewasdoingwithallthosestrangesymbols.Someraiseddoubtsabouthiswork.However,Sequoyahdidn'tstopworking.In1821,Sequoyahcompletedhisalphabet(字母表).Eachsymbolinthealphabetsymbolizedoneoftheeighty-fivesoundsintheCherokeelanguage.Bysayingthenameofeachsymbol,apersoncouldreadthespokenword.

Sequoyahtaughtthesymbolstohissix-year-olddaughter,Ayoka.Oneday,theywenttovisittheeldersoftheCherokeeNation.SequoyahaskedAyokatoleavewhilehewrotedownwhattheelderssaid.WhenAyokareturned,shereadoutloudwhatSequoyahhadwritten.Theelderswere stunned.Ayokawasabletorepeattheirwordswithoutbeingpresent!
