OnbehalfofmycolleaguesMay-BrittandEdvardMoser,andmyself,IwouldliketoexpressourgratitudetotheNobelFoundationforhostingthismagnificentbanquet.IwouldalsoliketoexpressourgratitudetotheNobelCommitteeandAssemblyfordeemingourresearchworthyofthisdistinguishedaccolade.Ithinkit’sfairtosaythattheNobelPrizeisthehighesthonoranyscientistorartistcanachieve.Wearepleasedanddelighted.
Weseetheawardsasarecognitionnotonlyofourselvesandouraccomplishmentsbutalsoofourcollaboratorsinthestudyofthespatialfunctionsofthehippocampus,andourcolleaguesinthewiderfieldofcognitiveandbehaviouralneuroscience.Cognitiveneuroscienceisenteringanexcitingerainwhichnewtechnologiesandideasaremakingitpossibletostudytheneuralbasisofcognition,perception,memoryandemotionatthelevelofnetworksofinteractingneurons,thelevelatwhichwebelievemanyoftheimportantoperationsofthebraintakeplace.Weknowaconsiderableamountabouthowindividualneuronsworkandhowtwocellscancommunicatewitheachotherbutthewayinwhichentirenetworksofhundredsandthousandsofneuronscooperate,interactwitheachother,andareorchestratedtocreateourideasandconceptsisanunderexploredareaofneuroscience.Itisprobablyatthislevelthatnetworkfailureoccursandleadstosomeofourmostdisturbingandintractablediseasesofthemindandbrain.
Thisnewareaofneurosciencehasbeenmadepossiblebythedevelopmentofnewoptical,computer-basedelectronic,andmolecularbiologicaltoolswhichwillallowustomonitortheactivityofmanythousandsofcellssimultaneouslyandtomanipulatetheiractivity.Wewillmovefromlookingatcorrelationsbetweenbrainactivityandbehaviourtostudyinghowthebraincausesmentalstatesandbehaviour.Itisfittingthereforethatourfellowlaureatesthisyearinphysicsandchemistryareworld’sleadersinprovidinguswithsomeofthesetools.Weareeagertobegintousesomeofthelaser-basedopticaltechniquesbeingdevelopedbyourchemistryco-laureates.
Wearealsopleasedtobereceivingtheprizewithlaureatesfromsomanydifferentcountries.ScienceisthequintessentialinternationalendeavourandthesterlingreputationoftheNobelawardsispartlyduetothewidely-perceivedlackofnationalandotherbiasesintheselectionofthelaureates.Webelievethatthefuturegreatcontributionstoourunderstandingofthebiologicalandphysicalworldcancomefromcitizensofanycountryinanypartoftheworld.ItistothecreditoftheNobelcommitteesthattheyhavesteadfastlyendeavouredtofollowAlfredNobel’swishesthattheprizesrecognisecontributionstothewelfareofhumanityregardlessofcountryoforigin,gender,raceorreligiousaffiliation.
