martinlutherkingdedicatedhislifetoloveandtojusticebetweenfellowhumanbeings.hediedinthecauseofthateffort.inthisdifficultday,inthisdifficulttimefortheunitedstates,it'sperhapswelltoaskwhatkindofanationweareandwhatdirectionwewanttomovein.forthoseofyouwhoareblack--consideringtheevidenceevidentlyisthattherewerewhitepeoplewhowereresponsible--youcanbefilledwithbitterness,andwithhatred,andadesireforrevenge.
wecanmoveinthatdirectionasacountry,ingreaterpolarization--blackpeopleamongstblacks,andwhiteamongstwhites,filledwithhatredtowardoneanother.orwecanmakeaneffort,asmartinlutherkingdid,tounderstand,andtocomprehend,andreplacethatviolence,thatstainofbloodshedthathasspreadacrossourland,withanefforttounderstand,compassion,andlove.
forthoseofyouwhoareblackandaretemptedtofillwith--befilledwithhatredandmistrustoftheinjusticeofsuchanact,againstallwhitepeople,iwouldonlysaythaticanalsofeelinmyownheartthesamekindoffeeling.ihadamemberofmyfamilykilled,buthewaskilledbyawhiteman.
butwehavetomakeaneffortintheunitedstates.wehavetomakeanefforttounderstand,togetbeyond,orgobeyondtheseratherdifficulttimes.

whatweneedintheunitedstatesisnotdivision;whatweneedintheunitedstatesisnothatred;whatweneedintheunitedstatesisnotviolenceandlawlessness,butislove,andwisdom,andcompassiontowardoneanother,andafeelingofjusticetowardthosewhostillsufferwithinourcountry,whethertheybewhiteorwhethertheybeblack.
soiaskyoutonighttoreturnhome,tosayaprayerforthefamilyofmartinlutherking--yeah,it'strue--butmoreimportantlytosayaprayerforourowncountry,whichallofuslove--aprayerforunderstandingandthatcompassionofwhichispoke.
wecandowellinthiscountry.wewillhavedifficulttimes.we'vehaddifficulttimesinthepast,butwe--andwewillhavedifficulttimesinthefuture.itisnottheendofviolence;itisnottheendoflawlessness;andit'snottheendofdisorder.
butthevastmajorityofwhitepeopleandthevastmajorityofblackpeopleinthiscountrywanttolivetogether,wanttoimprovethequalityofourlife,andwantjusticeforallhumanbeingsthatabideinourland.

totamethesavagenessofmanandmakegentlethelifeofthisworld.letusdedicateourselvestothat,andsayaprayerforourcountryandforourpeople.
