Ash-Wednesdaymarksaturningpointinthepoet’sintellectualdevelopmentandpoetictechnique.ItisevidentthatthecriticsingeneralareawareofthepersonalandreligiousallusionsthatoccurinAsh-Wednesday.ComprehensivesurveyingthestudyonAsh-Wednesdayathomeandabroad,itcanbefoundthatsomedealwithLentliturgyandpersonalconversion,someconnectDantewithEliot,sometreattheimageasmysticalexperience.
However,uptillnow,noonehaseveranalyzedthepoemusingthepoet’sowntheoryoftraditionandputthispoeminthecontextofhisownpoetrywriting.InthiswaycanweunderstandbettertheroleoftraditionalelementssuchastheLentliturgy,theallusionofDanteandothers,andmysticismofSt.JohnoftheCross.AllthesetraditionalelementsarethevehicleofEliot’spersonalemotion,intellectthought,andspiritualbelief,thatis,the“objectivecorrelative”ofthepoet.
AccordingtoEliot,apoetmusthavethe“historicalsense”,whichneeds“aperceptionofitspastnessofthepastanditspresence”,whichmakesamanwritewith“afeelingofthewholeliteratureofEuropefromHomerandwithinitthewholeliteratureofhisowncountryhasasimultaneousexistenceandcomposesasimultaneousorder.”Nomatterhowhisownpersonalvoiceexistsinhislaterpoems,thiskindof“historicalsense”worksallalonghispoetry.

AlthoughthereareinChinafewresearchesonCharlesJohnson,therehasbeenagreatdealofattentiononbothhisfictionandnon-fictionworkswhichareattractingmoreandmoreAmericanscholars.Amonghisfournovels,OxherdingtaleandMiddlePassage,intheformofthe“neo-slavenarrative”,arethemainattractionsforscholars,withthelattermorewell-knownandpopularbecauseofitsrepresentationoftheauthor’smorematurecraftsmanship.Uptillnow,therehavebeen8monographsonhisfournovelsandmorethan40journalarticlesexclusivelyonMiddlePassage.SinceMiddlePassageisgenerallyconsideredasbotha“blackphilosophicalfiction”and“neo-slavenarrative”,scholarshipfocusesmainlyonitsphilosophical,cultural,andpoliticalimplicationsandtheauthor’sliteraryinnovations.

BlackWritingSince1970(1988),aphenomenologicalstudyonracialidentityandpolitics,andTurningtheWheel:
essaysonBuddhismandwriting(2003),inwhichhediscussestheinfluenceofZenBuddhismandotherEasternthoughtsonhisworks,hehimselfablackBuddhist.Therefore,themainpartoftheresearchesonhisnovelsandshortstoriesareconcerningthephilosophicalandreligiousimplications.Herearesomerepresentativeresearchingfruits.

AppropriationandTransformationinMiddlePassage”(1995),DanielM.ScottIIIanalyzestheidentityformationofthisnovelintermsofJohnson’sphilosophicalthought,andarguesitisa“liberationofperception”.
In“TheAfricanSacrificialKingshipRitualandJohnson'sMiddlePassage”(1995),CelestinWalbyprobes,fromtheperspectiveoftheWesternphilosophicalhistory,Johnson’ssolutiontothe"Calibandilemma"oftheblackwriterwhohasthedifficulttaskofassertingagenuineblackidentitywhileusingalanguagethatisitselffundamentallyalienating:

InCharlesJohnson'sFiction(2002),WilliamR.NasharguesthatJohnson'shybridphilosophyofBuddhismandphenomenologydefiesthebasicpremisesofidentityformationandleadstotheperceptionofadifferentself.Juxtaposedwithjarringstorylinesofracialinjustice,Johnson'snotionthatraceisanillusioninformshisaesthetic,promoteshisstrategiesforbattlingoppression,andremindsreaderswhatAfricanAmericanshavealreadyovercomeinthequesttocultivatenewvisionsofidentity.
InUnderstandingCharlesJohnson(2004),GaryStorhoffexploresthemergingofphilosophicalandspiritualinterestswithJohnson’sconcernforAfricanAmericanculture.InidentifyingtheliteraryprinciplesofJohnson’stexts,Storhoffemphasizesthewriter’scommitmenttoBuddhismanddemonstratesitsimpactonhisthemes,characters,narratives,andrhetoric.SuggestingthatBuddhismisthelinchpinofJohnson’swork,StorhoffacknowledgesthatscholarsandcriticsareawareofJohnson’scloseassociationwiththetraditionbutprovidesreaderswithwhattheyneedtoappreciatefullyitsimportanceinhiswork.StorhoffalsoconsidersJohnson’sextensivestudyofWesternphilosophy,whichincludesaPh.D.inthesubject.StorhoffexplicatestheinfluenceoftheBritishempiricists,includingBishopGeorgeBerkeley,onthenovelist;hisrejectionofrelativismandutilitarianism;hisadaptationofAristotelianethics;andhisambivalenttreatmentofAmericanpragmatismasrecentlypropoundedbyCornelWest.JohnsonemergesfromStorhoff'sdiscussionasaprofoundlyeclectic,sophisticated,interdisciplinarywriter,withcomplexviewsonracerelationsinthetwenty-firstcentury.
InCharlesJohnson’snovelswritingtheAmericanpalimpsest(2005),RudolphByrdexaminesJohnson'sfournovelsundertherubricofphilosophicalblackfiction,asartthatinterrogatesexperience.ByrdcontendsthatJohnsonsuspends,shelves,andbracketsallpresuppositionsregardingAfricanAmericanlife.Thisbracketingaccomplished,theAfricanAmericanexperiencebecomesapurefieldofappearanceswithintwopoles:
