Theresearcherscarriedoutacreate-test-retestexperimentwhere63peoplewereaskedtocreateagesture,recallit,andrecallitagain10dayslater.Thegestureswerecapturedonarecognizersystemdesignedbytheteam.Usingthisdata,theytestedthecomplexityandaccuracyofeachgestureusinginformationtheory.Theresultoftheiranalysisisthatpeoplearefavorabletousefree-formgesturesaspasswords.

Toputtheiranalysisintopractice,theresearchersthenhadsevenstudentsincomputerscienceandengineering,eachwithconsiderableexperiencewithtouchscreens(触摸屏),attempttostealafree-formgesturepasswordbyobservingaphoneusersecretly.Noneofthemwereabletocopythegestureswithenoughaccuracy.Thegesturesappeartobeextremelypowerfulagainstattacks.
