Anewstudysuggestsit’sbecausetherumorsareallaboutus.“Gossipreceiverstendtousepositiveandnegativegroupinformationtoimprove,promote,andprotecttheself,”writesaresearchteam,ledbyElenaMartinescuoftheUniversityofGroningenintheNetherlands.InthejournalPersonalityandSocialPsychologyBulletin,theresearchersdescribedtwoexperimentsteam,ledbyElenaMartinescuoftheUniversitydescribedtwoexperimentstestingthepersonalvaluegossipreceiversget.

Thefirstfeatured178universityundergraduates,whohadallpreviouslyworkedonatleastonecourseassignmentwithagroupoffourormorestudents.Participantswereaskedtorecallandwriteashortdescriptionofanincident,inwhichagroupmembersharedwiththemeitherpositiveornegativeinformationaboutanothergroupmember’ssecret.Theythenreportedtheirlevelofagreementwithaseriesofstatements.Someofthesemeasuredtheself-improvementvalueofthegossip(“TheinformationreceivedmademethinkIlearnalotfromX”);othersmeasureditsself-promotionvalue(“TheinformationIreceivedmademefeelthatIamdoingwellcomparedtoX”).Stillothersmeasuredwhetherthegossipraisedpersonalconcerns(“TheinformationIreceivedmademefeelthatImustprotectmyimageinthegroup”).

Inthesecondexperiment,122undergraduateswereassignedtheroleof“salesagent”atamajorcompany.Theyreceivedgossipfromacolleaguethatathirdpersoneitherdidverywellorverybadlyataperformanceevaluation,andwerethenaskedabouttheemotionsthatinformationcaused.Theyalsorespondedtotheabove-mentionedsetofstatementspresentedtotheparticipantsinthefirstexperiment.

Ineachexperiment,participantsfoundbothnegativeandpositivegossiptobeofpersonalvaluewithdifferentreasons.“Positivegossiphasself-improvementvalue,”theywrite.“Competence-relatedpositivegossipaboutotherscontainslessonsabouthowtoimproveone’sowncompetence.Ontheotherhand,negativegossiphasself-promotionvalue,becauseitprovidesindividualswithsocialcomparisoninformationthatjustifiesself-promotingjudgmentswhichresultsinfeelingsofpride.”

Inaddition,theresultsshowedthatnegativegossipbroughtaboutself-protectionconcerns,theresearcherswrite.“Negativegossipmakespeopleconcernedthattheirreputationsmaybeatrisk,astheymaypersonallybecometargetsofnegativegossipinthefuture,whichgeneratesfear.”Fearishardlyapleasantsensation(感觉),butitcanbeamotivatingone.Asresearchersputit:
