DrHobaiterusedbehaviorsamplingandfilmedallrecordedcasesofgesturalcommunication.Othergesturesincludestompingtheirfeettoaskanotherchimptostopwhattheyaredoing,andslappingobjectstogethertoaskanothertofollowthem.Ofthe19meanings,17encouragedinteractionstostart,ortodevelop,suchas“movecloser,”and“changeplay”.Someofthegestureswerefoundtohavemorethanonemeaning.andonly10ofthe66gestureswereusedforonlyasinglemeaning.

Researcherscollectedatotalof471videoclipsfromtwosocialgroupsofchimpsatashelternearKinshasa,DemocraticRepublicofCongo.Aswellasidentifyingwhatthegesturemeans,theyalsodiscoveredthetechniqueneededtoincreasethechancesofsuccess.

“Humanchildrenusegesturestocommunicatebeforetheyproducetheirfirstwords,andtheirearliestgesturestypicallyappeararound10monthsofage,”explainedtheresearchers.“Ingreatapes,thereisgoodevidencethatlanguage-trainedindividualsarecapableofacquiringandunderstandingsignals,butthisisfarlessclearintheirnaturalcommunication.”
