VSObegantoermsendteachersofEnglishtoChinainer1981…inthatyearVSOsent6EnglishteacherstoerteacherscollegesinerremoteareasinChina…erinthepastmorethantwentyyearserVSO'sprojectsinChinahavebeenincreasing.Nowwehavealtogetherabout144volunteersworkinginChina.

VSOpreparingforchange

AndywhalleyisavolunteerforestryspecialistwithVSO.He'sjustarrivedinlindionthesoutherntanzaniancoastandthisishiswelcomeintothecommunity.Adesiretosharetheirskillswiththoseinpoorercountriesandatasteforadventureiswhatdrivesmostvolunteers.However,andyhasbroughtmuchmorethanhisspecialskillswithhim.Fortyyearsexperiencehaveshownthatthebestvolunteersarrivewithminimalexpectationsandmaximumopenness.Andpreparingforthatstartslongbeforeyouarrivehere.

ThesemenandwomenarepreparingfortheiroverseasplacementswithVSO.Atthisstagetheydon'tknowanyone.TheonlythingstheyshareisthefactthattheyaregoingsomewherewithVSO…andthattheyallhavefearsandanxieties.
