“Habitatdestruction,pollutionoroverfishingeitherskilloffwildcreaturesandplantsorkeavesthembadlyweakened,”saidDerekTittensor,anoceanecologistattheWorldConservationMonitoringCentreinCambridge.“Thetroubleisthatincomingdecades,theadditionalthreatofworseningclimatechangewillbecomemoreandmorecommonandcouldthenkilloffthesesurvivors.”

Theproblem,accordingtoNature,isworsenedbecauseofthehugegapsinscientistsknowledgeabouttheplanet’sbiodiversity.Evaluationsofthetotalnumberofspeciesofanimalsandplantsalivevaryfrom2millionto50million.Inaddition,evaluationsofcurrentratesofspecies’disappearancesvaryfrom500to36,000ayear.“Thatistherealproblemweface,”addedTittensor.“Thescaleofuncertaintyishuge.”
