everyday,almost48millionshoppingbagsareusedthroughoutthePhilippines,addinguptomorethan17billionayear.Andthatfiguredoesnotincludethesmaller,thinnerandoftentransparentplasticbagsknownas"labo"bags-around16.5billionofthoseareusedperyearacrossthecountry,thereportsays.Thefiguresarebasedon21wasteassessmentsconductedin13citiesacrossthePhilippines,withthenationalfiguresproducedbyextrapolating(推断)fromlocalresults.

Morethanhalfofnon-recyclableplasticanalyzedinthesurveycamefromsachets—smallplasticpacketsoftenlinedwithaluminiumorcontainingothermaterialsthatmakethemnon-recyclable.SmallportionsofproductsrangingfromcoffeetoshampooareoftensoldinsachetsinthePhilippines,andareseenasanaffordablesolutionforconsumers.

ButGratesaidthepopularityappearedtobemorearesultofwhatisavailable,withwealthierconsumerssimplybuyingmultiplesachets.“Ifyougotothesupermarkets,it’srareforyoutobeabletobuycoffeeinbiggercontainers;it'sallinsachets,”hesaid.
