Thebraincortexistheoutermostlayerofneural(神经中枢的)tissuethatprocessesinformationfromthephysicalworld. Itiscriticalforcognitivefunctionssuchasperception(直觉),language,memoryandconsciousnessbutthinsaswematureintooldage.

Thoughthedifferencewassignificantfromparticipantswhospentlesstimeusingsmartdevices,thestudydirectorcautionedagainstdrawingaconclusion.  

Dr.GayaDowling,anNIHdoctorworkingontheproject,cautionedagainstdrawingaconclusionbecausetheyaren’tcompletelysureit’sbeingcausedbytheincreaseduseofmoderntechnology.Theywon’tbeabletodrawadefinitiveoutcomeuntiltheyfollowthemoverthecourseofseveralyears.

Dr.Dowlingsaid:

“Itwon’tbeuntilwefollowthemovertimethatwewillseeifthereareoutcomesthatareassociatedwiththedifferencesthatwe’reseeinginthissinglesnapshot.”

A2014studyshowedthatthereisadirectcorrelationbetweenthethicknessofthebraincortexandIQscore.Thecortexbeginstothinaftertheageoffiveorsixaspartofthenormalagingprocess.

Thefindingsshowedthat peoplewithasignificantincreaseinIQdidnothavetheexpectedcorticalthinningandpeoplewithasignificantdecreaseinIQhadexaggerated(夸张)cortical(皮质的)thinning.
