Spillsofhazardouschemicals(suchasinorganicsulfuracids,oleumsofstrength35to65%,liquidsulfurtrioxide,orchlorosulfonicacid)canbetreatedwithhighmolecularweightpolyacrylamide,polymethylmethacrylateorablendofpolyacrylamides.Eachformsapolymerskinovertheliquidsurface,suppressingthefume&allowingaccesstothespillsothatcleanupcanbedoneinacontrolledmanner.PolyacrylamidevariantDP1916isbesttreatmentforchlorosulfonicacid&oleum20.Polycarbonategranulesusedinalayerapprox80mmthicktoppedoffwithSorboil(anabsorbentclay)isbesttreatmentfordikedspillsofoleumsofallstrengths&liqsulfurtrioxide.Theacidbeneaththeskinisbestrecoveredbypumping.Unconfinedspillsofsulfurtrioxide&oleumsofallstrengthscanbetreatedwithexcessanhydroussodiumsulfatewhichformsaconcrete-likeresiduethatcanbesprayedwithwaterwithin1hour,dissolvingitslowly.Expandedperlite,ifcontainedindegradablebags,willeffectivelyabsorb&containsulfuracids.Fumesofoleum65%arisingfromspillageof80to750kgcanbekilledwithin4to13min.Asphaltorconcreteisslightlyaffected.
