Bencheshavebeenaroundinmanyschools.ButagroupofschoolkidsinCorkinthesouthofIrelandaretryingtodosomethingabitdifferentwiththem.TheyhavecreatedaspecialbenchcalledBuddyorFriendshipBench.

Theideaforthebenchcameaboutlastyear,whenReginaFarrell,schoolcounseloratMcIntyreElementary,wasconductingaleadershipgrouptohelpstudentsovercomeshynessandgainconfidence.Fourfourth-gradestudentscameupwiththeideawhenworkingwithhim.

TheconceptoftheBuddyBenchissimple:

Studentswhowanttotakepartinplaygroundgamesandactivities,butmayfeelhesitant,cantakeaseat,whichsuggeststootherchildrenontheplaygroundthattheymayneedanextraboosttoparticipate.Itbuildskid’sself-esteem(自尊)toaskotherstoplaywiththem.Likewise,reachingouttoapeerwhoisfeelingleftoutmakesagreatdifference.

Butdochildrenactuallyusethebenches?

It’ssomethingSineadMcgillowayfromMaynoothUniversityhasbeenlookingat.“Wefoundthat40%ofthechildrenhadactuallyusedthebenchesatthetimeofthestudy.Andover90%saidthattheywouldtalktoachildifthatchildwassittingonthebench.”

“SinceitwasinstalledonNov.16,thebenchhasbeeneffective,”headded.“Thesimpleconcepthasgainedapplausefromthestudents,andalreadyhascreatedamoreinclusiveenvironmentwithintheschoolcommunity.”

“Eachday,IgoandseetheBuddyBenchworking,”Farrellsaid.“Thelessonstheyarelearningnowwillbenefitthemtheirentirelives.Itissimplyabeautifulexampleofkidswantingtobekindandcontinuetobekindeveryday.”
