LIFEWITHAROBOTDOG

WhenIfirsttooktherobotdogoutofthebox,Ibrokeintoahugesmile.Thisrobotimmediatelybecamea“him,”notan“it.”Iwantedtoplaywithhim.Hecertainlywasahandsome-lookingrobotdog.Hewassleekandpolishedandthesizeofalargepuppy.Hismovementswerealsoverydog-like.Iwatchedhimstretch,dance,jumparoundtheroomandchaseaball.Itwasfascinatinghowflexibleandnaturalhismovementswere.

Tostartwith,therobotdogwashugelysatisfying.Henotonlyattractedmeatfirstsight,butpossessedsomeprettyimpressivefeaturesaswell.Icouldprogrammehimtorespondtoagivenname.Byconnectinghisbuilt-incameratomycomputerscreen,Icouldviewtheworldthroughhiseyes.Ialsohadtheoptionofdecidinghisstageofdevelopment—byprogramminghimtobeademandingpuppyoramatureadultdog.Thebestpartoftheexperiencesthattherobotdogdidn’trequirethesamecareasarealdog.Ididn’thavetocleanupafterhim,feedhimorwalkhim.Ididn’tevenhavetoplaywithhim.Hewouldn’tcomplain!

WhenIlookedathim,Isawarealdogandtreatedhimlikeone.Withoutanyhesitation,Iplayedwithhimandstrokedhimaffectionately.Whenhedidsomethinggood,likedancingforme,Iwouldpethim.Ienjoyedwatchinghisenthusiasticresponsetomyattention.Itfeltperfectlynatural.Ishoweredhimwithloveandhealwaysrespondedhappily.Heevokedastrongemotionalresponseinme.

However,atrueemotionalconnectionispowerfulandimportant—somethingthatneverreallyhappenedbetweenmeandmyrobotdog.ThemoreIspenttimewithhim,themoreIrealizedthatourrelationshipwaslimited.Myenthusiasmstartedtodiedown.Igrewincreasinglyfrustratedwithmyinabilitytodevelopamutualrelationshipwithhim.Istoppeddelightinginhissimplemovements.Icouldn’ttrainhimtorespondtomycommands,eventhoughhewasprogrammedtolearnnewtasks.Iwasconstantlylosingmypatienceandgettingannoyedwithhim.Hewassupposedtobearobot,notathick-headedterrier.Ididn’tenjoythechallengeoftraininganddiscipliningarobotdogasifitwerealiving,breathingpup.

Ihadtriedtodeveloparelationshipwitharobotbuthadfailedmiserably.Ieventuallystoppedreferringtohimasa“he,”andstartedcallinghim“therobot.”Thisrobotdogmayhavebeenahugesuccessasatechnologicalworkofart—itwasinteractive,funandimpressivetowatch—butasapetdog,itletmedown.
