lecturetoursaroundtheworldthroughouthiscareer.Duringhiswholelife,MarkTwaincarriedonmanykindsofjobs.From1864,hebecameareporterandtravelledinEurope.Bytheendofhislifein1910,hehadbecomeknownastheperfectexampleofAmericanauthor.Behindthemaskofhumourandsatire,hiswritingoftencriticizedsocialmorals,politicsandhumannature,makinghisliteratureauniquereflectionoftheAmericanexperienceinthelatterpartofthenineteenthcentury.Inthe1890sMarkTwainbecameverypoor.Torecoverfromthebankruptcy,hestartedaworldlecturetour,duringwhichoneofhisdaughtersdied.Thedeathofhiswifeandhisseconddaughterdarkenedhislateryears.

1858-MarkmadehisplanstotraveltoSouthAmerica,butwhenhestarteddownMississippiRiver,hetookabreakfromtheriverandwenttoNewOrleans.Whilehewasthere,hemetHoraceBixbyandmadehimteachhimhowtobeariverboatpilot.

1859-InApril,MarkTwainbecamealicensedriverboatpilot.

1863-ClemensbegantoworkforthenewspaperinVirginiaCity,Nevada.Thisiswhenhestartedtousethename,"MarkTwain."MarkTwainmeanssafewater.

1866-TwaintraveledtoHawaiitowritearticledinthenewspaper.Hestayedthereforalongwhile.

1870-Samuelthoughthiswritingwasbetterthannewspapersandmagazines,sohestartedtraveling,writing,andlecturing.
