   Butin2002,NewYorkCity,apioneerofrecycling,foundthatits recyclingprogramwaslosingmoney,soitstoppedglassandplasticrecycling.OthermajorcitieswatchedcloselytoseehowNewYorkwasdoingwithitsremainingprogram(thecityneverstoppedpaperrecycling).Butthenitcloseditslastlandfill(垃圾填埋地),andprivatecompaniesoutofNewYorkraisedpricesduetotheincreasedworkloadofcarryingawayanddisposingNewYork’sgarbage.Asaresult,glassand plasticrecyclingbecameprofitableforthecityagain,andNewYorkbroughttheprogramback.AccordingtoCecilAdamsofTheChicagoReader,thelessonslearnedbyNewYorkarerelevanteverywhere.Hebelievesthat,ifmanagedcorrectly,recyclingprogramsshouldcostcitieslessthangarbagedisposal.

Eventhoughthebenefitsofrecyclingoverdisposalaremany,keepinmindthatitbetterservestheenvironmentto“reduceandreuse”beforerecyclingisevenconsideredasachoice.
