JohnSnowwasanEnglishphysicianandaleaderintheadoptionofanesthesia（麻醉的）and

cember1844andwasadmittedtotheRoyalCollegeofPhysiciansin1850.In1850hewasalsooneof
thefoundingmembersoftheEpidemiologicalSocietyofLondon,formedinresponsetothecholera
outbreakof1849.
In1830SnowbecameamemberoftheTemperanceMovement,andlivedforadecadeorsoasa
vegetarianandteetotaler.Inthemid-1840shishealthdecreased,andhereturnedtomeat-eatingand
drinkingwine.Hecontinueddrinkingpurewater（viaboiling）throughouthisadultlife.Henevermarried.
SnowsufferedastrokewhileworkinginhisLondonofficeon10June1858.Hewas45yearsold
