Overall,afteraccountingforgrandparents’ageandgeneralstateofhealth,theriskofdyingovera20-yearperiodwasone-thirdlowerforgrandparentswhocaredfortheirgrandchildren,comparedwithgrandparentswhodidnotprovideanychildcare.

Halfofthegrandparentswhocaredforgrandchildrenwerestillalivetenyearsaftertheinitialinterview.Thesamewastrueforparticipantswhodidnothavegrandchildrenbutsupportedtheiradultchildreninsomeway,suchashelpingwithhousework.Incontrast,abouthalfoftheparticipantswhodidnothelpothersdiedwithinfiveyearsafterthestartofthestudy.

"Caregivingmaybethoughtalsoasanactivitythatkeepscaregiversphysicallyandmentallyactive,"saidProfessorArpino,addingthatpreviousstudiessuggestthatcaregivingmayimprovecognitive(认知的)functioning,mentalandphysicalhealth.
