Higgs,23,though,isoneofasmallgroupofeducatorsandactivistsreinventinghowminoritylanguagesaretaughtandpreservedonlinebyusingcutting-edgetechnology.

Whenhewas17,Higgshada“crazyteenageidea”.HehadbegunusingDuolingo,amobilelanguage-learningapp,tostudyFrench,andwonderedifthecreatorshadconsideredaddingsupportforIrish.

Atthetimeinearly2013,therewerefivelanguagesonDuolingo,thesmallestofwhich,Italian,hasanestimated67.9millionspeakersworldwide.Bycomparison,atitsheightinthe18thcentury,therewereanestimatedfourmillionIrishspeakers.Todaythefigureiscloserto1.2million.
