AstudybyscientistsinFinlandhasfoundthatmobilephoneradiationcancausechangesinhumancellsthatmightaffectthebrain,theleaderoftheresearchteamsaid.

ThestudyatFinland'sRadiationandNuclearSafetyAuthorityfoundthatexposuretoradiationfrommobilephonescancauseincreasedactivityinhundredsofproteinsinhumancellsgrowninalaboratory,hesaid.
“Weknowthatthereissomebiologicalresponse.Wecandetectitwithourverysensitiveapproaches,butwedonotknowwhetheritcanhaveanyphysiologicaleffectsonthehumanbrainorhumanbody,”Leszczynskisaid.
Nonethelessthestudy,theinitialfindingsofwhichwerepublishedlastmonthinthescientificjournalDifferentiation,raisesnewquestionsaboutwhethermobilephoneradiationcanweakenthebrain'sprotectiveshieldagainstharmfulsubstances.
Thestudyfocusedonchangesincellsthatlinebloodvesselsandonwhethersuchchangescouldweakenthefunctioningoftheblood-brainbarrier,whichpreventspotentiallyharmfulsubstancesfromenteringthebrainfromthebloodstream,Leszczynskisaid.
Thestudyfoundthataproteincalledhsp27linkedtothefunctioningoftheblood-brainbarriershowedincreasedactivityduetoirradiationandpointedtoapossibilitythatsuchactivitycouldmaketheshieldmorepermeable(能透过的),hesaid.
“Increasedproteinactivitymightcausecellstoshrink—notthebloodvesselsbutthecellsthemselves—andthentinygapscouldappearbetweenthosecellsthroughwhichsomemoleculescouldpass.”hesaid.
