OnJan17,UKPrimeMinisterTheresaMayappointedpoliticianTraceyCrouchasthecountry’sveryfirst“MinisterforLoneliness”.Herjobistoaddressthelonelinessthatthecountry’sbeenfeeling—aproblemwhich,accordingtoUKgovernmentresearch,isaffectingmorethan9millionpeopleinthecountry,andismoreharmfultoone’sphysicalandmentalhealththansmoking15cigarettesaday.
Andtheproblemhasn’tjustappearedrecently.Backin2014,theUKwasgiventhetitleofthe“lonelinesscapitalofEurope”byTheTelegraph.AsurveycarriedoutbythenewspaperfoundthatBritishpeoplewerelesslikelytogettoknowtheirneighborsorbuildstrongrelationshipswithpeoplethanthosefromotherEuropeancountries.
