Tonightmorethan200yearsafteraformercolonywontherighttodetermineitsowndestiny,thetaskofperfectingourunionmovesforward.

Itmovesforwardbecauseofyou.Itmovesforwardbecauseyoureaffirmedthespiritthathastriumphedoverwaranddepression,thespiritthathasliftedthiscountryfromthedepthsofdespairtotheheightsofhope.Thebeliefthatwhileeachofuswillpursueourownindividualdreams,weareanAmericanfamilyandweriseorfalltogetherasonenationandasonepeople.

Tonightinthiselection,you,theAmericanpeople,reminduswhileourroadhasbeenhard,whileourjourneyhasbeenlong,wehavepickedourselvesup,wehavefoughtourwayback,andweknowinourheartsthattheUnitedStatesofAmerica–thebestisyettocome.

[cheering]IwanttothankeveryAmericanwhoparticipatedinthiselection[CHEERING]Whetheryouvotedfortheveryfirsttimeorwaitinginlineforaverylongtime.

Bytheway,weneedtofixthat.Whetheryoupoundedthepavementorpickedupthephone.WhetheryouheldanObamasignoraRomneysign,youmadeyourvoiceheard.

Andyoumadeadifference.IjustgotoffthephonewithGovernorRomneyandIcongratulatedhimandPaulRyanonahard-foughtcampaign.[CHEERING]Wemayhavefoughtfiercely,butit’sonlybecausewelovethiscountrydeeply.Andwecaresostronlyaboutitsfuture.

FromGeorgetoLenoretotheirsonMitt,theRomneyfamilyhaschosentogivebacktoAmericansthroughpublicservice.Andthatisalegacythatwehonorandapplaudtonight.[CHEERING]Intheweeksahead,IalsolookforwardtosittingdownwithGovernorRomneytotalkaboutwherewecanworktogethertomovethiscountryforward.[CHEERING]

Iwanttothankmyfriendandpartnerofthelast4years,America’shappywarrior,thebestVicePresidentanyonecouldeverhopefor:

JoeBiden.AndIwouldn’tbethemanIamtodaywithoutthewomanwhoagreedtomarrymetwentyyearsago.Letsaythispublicly,MichelleIhaveneverlovedyoumore.IhaveneverbeenproudertowatchtherestofAmericafallinlovewithyoutooasournation’sfirstlady.

SashaandMaliabeforeourveryeyesyouaregrowinguptobecometwostrongsmartbeautifulyoungwomen,justlikeyourmom.AndI’msoproudofyouguys.ButIwillsaythatfornowonedogisprobablyenough.Tothebestcampaignteamandvolunteersinthehistoryofpolitics.Thebest.Thebestever.Someofyouwerethistimearound.Someofyouwerenewthistimearoundandsomeofyouhavebeenatmysidesincetheverybeginningbutallofyouarefamily.

Nomatterwhatyoudoorwhereyougofromhere,youwillcarrythememoryofthehistorywemadetogetherandyouwillhavethelifelongappreciationofagratefulpresident.

Thankyouforbelievingalltheway,througheveryhill,througheveryvalley.[applause]YouliftedmeupthewholewayandIwillalwaysbegratefulforeverythingthatyou’vedoneandalltheincredibleworkthatyou’veputin.[applause]

Iknowthatpoliticalcampaignscansometimeseemsmall,evensilly,andthatprovidesplentyoffodderforthesynicswhotellusthatpoliticsisnothingmorethanacontestofegosorthedomainofspecialinterests.

Butifyouevergetthechancetotalktofolkswhoturnoutatralliesandcrowdedoutalongaroplineinahighschoolgymorsawfolksworkinglateatacampaignofficeinsometinycountyfarawayfromhome,you’lldiscoversomethingelse;you’llhearthedeterminationinthevoiceofayoungfieldorganizerwhoisworkinghiswaythroughcollegeandwantstomakesureeverychildhasthatsameopportunity.[applause]

You’llheartheprideinthevoiceofavolunteerwhoisgoingdoortodoorbecauseherbrotherwasfinallyhiredwhenthelocalautoplantaddedanothershift.[applause]

You’llhearthedeeppatriotisminthevoiceofamilitaryspousewhoisworkingthephoneslateatnighttomakesurethatnoonewhofightsforthiscountryeveryhastofightforajoboraroofovertheirheadwhentheycomehome.[applause]

That’swhywedothis.That’swhatpoliticscanbe.That’swhyelectionsmatter.It’snotsmall,it’sbig.It’simportant.Democracyinanationof300-millioncanbenoisyandmessyandcomplicated.Wehaveourownopinions,eachofushasdeeplyheldbeliefs.

Andwhenwegothroughtoughtimes,whenwemakebigdecisionsasacountry;itnecessarilystirspassions,stirsupcontroversy.Thatwon’tchangeaftertonightanditshouldn’t.Theseargumentswehaveareamarkofourliberty.

Wecanneverforgetthataswespeak,peopleindistantnationsareriskingtheirlivesrightnowjustforachancetoargueabouttheissuesthatmatter[applause]Thechancetocasttheirballotslikewedidtoday.

Butdespiteallourdifferences,mostofussharecertainhopesforAmerica’sfuture.Wewantourkidstogrowupinacountrywheretheyhaveaccesstothebestschoolsandthebestteachers.[applause]Acountrythatlivesuptoitslegacyasthegloballeaderintechnologyanddiscoveryandinnovation;withallthegoodjobsandnewbusinessesthatfollow.

Acountrythatlivesuptoitslegacyasagloballeaderintechnology,discoveryandinnovation.Withallthegoodjobsandbusinessesthatfollow,toliveinAmericathatisn’tburdenedbydebt,thatisn’tweakenedbyinequality.Thatisn’tthreatenedbythedestructivepowerofawarmingplanet.Wewanttopassonacountrythatissavedandrespectedandadmiredaroundtheworld.Anationthatisdefendedbythestrongestmilitaryonearthandthebesttroopsthisworldhaseverknown.Butalsoacountrythatmoveswithconfidencebeyondthistimeofwartoshapeapeace.Thatisbuiltonthepromiseofdignityofeveryhumanbeing.

WebelieveinagenerousAmerica,inacompassionateAmerica,inatolerantAmerica,opentothedreamsofanimmigrantsdaughterthatstudiesinourschoolsandpledgestoourflag.TotheyoungboyonthesouthsideofChicago,whoseesalightbeyondtheneareststreetcorner.TothefurnitureworkerschildinNorthCarolinawhowantstobecomeanengineerorascientistoranentrepreneur.Adiplomatorevenapresident,that’sthefuturewehopefor.That’sthevisionweshare,that’swhereweneedtogo.Forward.That’swhereweneedtogo.

Nowwewilldisagreesometimesfiercelyonhowtogetthere,asithasformorethantwocenturies,progresswillcomeinfitsandstarts,it’snotalwaysastraightlineorasmoothpath.Byitselfarecognitionofourcommonhopesanddreamswon’tendthegridlock.Orsolveallourproblemsorsubstituteforthehardworkofbuildingconsensus.Andmakingthedifficultcompromisesneededtomovethecountryforwardbutthatcommonbondiswherewemustbegin.Oureconomyisrecovering,ourdecadeofwarisending.Alongcampaignisnowover.[applause]

AndwhetherIearnedyourvoteornot,Ihavelistenedtoyou.IhavelearnedfromyouandyouhavemademeabetterPresident.Withyourstoriesandyourstruggles,IreturnedtotheWhiteHousemoredeterminedandmoreinspiredthaneverabouttheworkthereistodoandthefuturethatliesahead[applause]Tonight,youvotedforaction,notpoliticsasusual.Youelectedustofocusonyourjobs,notours.

Andinthecomingweeksandmonths,Iamlookingforwardtoreachingoutandworkingwithleadersofbothpartiestomeetthechallengeswecanonlysolvetogether:

reducingourdeficit,reformingourtaxcode,fixingourimmigrationsystem,freeingourselvesfromforeignoil,we’vegotmoreworktodo.

Butthatdoesn’tmeanyourworkisdone.Theroleofcitizeninourdemocracydoesnotendwithyourvote.America’sneverbeenaboutwhatcouldbedoneforus,it’saboutwhatcanbedonebyus,together,throughthehardandfrustratingbutnecessaryworkofself-government.That’stheprinciplewewerefoundedon.

Thiscountryhasmorewealththananynation,butthat’snotwhatmakesusrich.Wehavethemostpowerfulmilitaryinhistorybutthat’snotwhatmakesusstrong.Ouruniversity,ourculture,arealltheenvyoftheworldbutthat’snotwhatkeepstheworldcomingtoourshores.WhatmakesAmericaexceptionalarethebondsthatholdtogetherthemostdiversenationonEarth,thebeliefthatourdestinyisshared,thatthiscountryonlyworkswhenweacceptcertainobligationstooneanotherandthefuturegenerationssothatthefreedomsomanyAmericanshavefoughtforanddiedforcomeswithresponsibilitiesaswellasrights,andamongthosearelove,andcharity,anddutyandpatriotism.That’swhatmakesAmericagreat.

IamhopefultonightbecauseIhaveseenthatspiritatworkinAmerica.I’veseenitinthefamilybusinesswhoseownerswouldrathercuttheirownpaythanlayofftheirneighbors,andintheworkerswhowouldrathercutbacktheirhoursthanseeafriendloseajob.

I’veseenitinthesoldierswhore-enlistafterlosingalimb,andinthoseSEALSwhochargedupthestairsintodarknessanddangerbecausetheyknewtherewasabuddybehindthemwatchingtheirback.

I’veseenitontheshoresofNewJerseyandNewYorkwhereleadersfromeverypartyandlevelofgovernmenthavesweptasidetheirdifferencestohelpacommunityrebuildfromthewreckageofaterriblestorm.

AndIsawitjusttheotherday,inMentor,Ohiowehreafathertoldthestoryofhiseight-year-olddaughterwho’slongbattlewithleukemianearlycosttheirfamilyeverythinghaditnotbeenforhealthcarereformpassingjustafewmonthsbefore.Theinsurancecompanywasabouttostoppayingforhercare

Ihadanopportunitytonotjusttalktothefatherbutmeetthisincredibledaughterofhis,andwhen
