Hetaughtthemabouttheinventionoffarmingandkeepinganimals.Thiswasanimportantdiscovery,becausebylearningtocultivate(耕作)theland,andcareforanimals,mankindwouldalwayshavefoodsteadilyavailable.Italsomeantthatpeoplecouldremainlivinginoneplace,andthismadeiteasiertosetabouttasksthatwouldtakealongwhiletoplete,likebuildingtowns,cities,andallthatwereinthem.Allthechildrenwerelisteningattractedbythisstory,untilLucyjumpedup:

“Andifthatwassoimportantandimprovedeverythingsomuch,whyarewenomadsalloveragain,Mr.Arnold?

Mr.Arnolddidn’tknowwhattosay.Lucywasaveryintelligentgirl.Heknewthatshelivedwithherparentsinahouse,soshemustknowthatherfamilywerenotnomads;sowhatdidshemean?

“Wehaveallbeenomadsagain,”continuedLucy,“Theotherday,outsidethecity,theywerecuttingtheforestdown.Awhileagoafishermantoldmehowtheyfish.It’sthesamewitheveryone:

whenthere’snomoreforestlefttheforestersgoelsewhere,andwhenthefishrunoutthefishermenmoveon.That’swhatthenomadsdid,isn’tit?

Theteachernodded,thoughtfully.Really,Lucywasright.Mankindhadturnedintonomads.Insteadoflookingafterthelandinawaythatwecouldbesureitwouldkeepsupplyingourneeds,wekeptdevelopingituntilthelandwasbare.Andthenoffwewouldgotothenextplace!

Theclassspenttherestoftheafternoontalkingaboutwhattheycoulddotoshowhowtobemorecivilized.
