Lesson47A thirsty ghost 嗜酒的鬼魂

A public house which was recently bought by Mr. Ian Thompson is up for sale. Mr. Thompson is going to sell it because it is haunted. He told me that he could not go to sleep one night because he heard a strange noise coming from the bar. The next morning, he found that the doors had been blocked by chairs and the furniture had been moved. Though Mr. Thompson had turned the lights off before he went to bed, they were on in the morning. He also said that he had found five empty whisky bottles which the ghost must have drunk the night before. When I suggested that some villagers must have come in for a free drink, Mr. Thompson shook his head. The villagers have told him that they will not accept the pub even if he gives it away.

5. furniture ['fə:

nitʃə] [U] n. 家具 

a piece of furniture 一件家具 / an article of furniture 

eg. We had little furniture. 我几乎没什么家具。

furnish ['fə:

niʃ] v.（给屋子，房间）装置（家具等） 

eg. The apartment is well furnished. 这套公寓里面家具很全。

suggest that …（should） do… （用虚拟语气）

8. shake [ʃeik]  （shook, shaken） 

1） 使（建筑物等）摇动，使（身体，声音等）哆嗦，摇（瓶等）

eg. The explosion shook the houses. 爆炸使屋子晃动起来。

eg. The teacher shook him by the shoulders.  老师摇晃他的肩膀。

eg. Shake the bottle before taking the medicine. 服药之前要把药瓶摇晃几下。

2） 抖落……撒上……抖掉…… 

eg. The children were shaking chestnuts from the tree. 孩子们摇动树枝想把栗子摇落。

chestnut ['tʃes,nʌt, -nət] n.栗子；栗树；栗木；栗色马

1） 出售,上市  

sales （pl.） 销售额（量） 

2） 廉价出售（Am.）  

eg. The new type of computer is on sale. 

有两层含义：

 这款新式计算机已经上市出售。

 /这款新式计算机优惠销售。

for sale 待售 （通常由物主或代理人经手） 

eg. I’m sorry. The painting is not for sale. 对不起，这画不卖。

eg. The haunted house is for sale. 这所闹鬼的屋子正在待售。

be up for sale 供出售  

be up for 为了某一目的, 有待于 

eg. This problem is up for discussion. 这个问题有待于讨论。

 is going to打算,将要（未来时） 

3. He told me that he could not go to sleep one night because he heard a strange noise coming from the bar. 

He told me that… that引导宾语从句，告知told的内容。

coming from the bar此刻分词短语作宾语补足语 

1）   go to sleep睡着觉  fall sleep 睡着 

fall into a sound sleep 酣睡 

/fall into a deep sleep  

go to bed 去睡觉 

2）  see/hear/watch后可以加动词原形,也可以加ing形式。

用动词原形表示看见或听见整个动作的全数进程，用ing形式时，表示动作正在进行，看见或听见整个动作的一部份。

eg. I saw him cross the street. 我看见他穿过马路。

eg. I saw him crossing the street. 我看见他正在穿过马路。

eg. I heard her go out. 我听见她出去了。

eg. I heard her going out. 我听见她正出门。

eg. I watched her go out of the room. 我注意到她从房间出去了。

eg. I watched her going out of the room. 我注意到她正从房间出去。

有相同用法的词：

hear, see, watch, feel , notice等

4. The next morning, he found that the doors had been blocked by chairs and the furniture had been moved. 

the next morning 第二天早晨 → the following morning

the next day 第二天 → the following day 

that the doors had…… been moved 为宾语从句 

had been blocked过去完成时的被动语态 

5. Though Mr. Thompson had turned the lights off before he went to bed, they were on

 in the morning. 

though引导妥协状语从句 

though / although/ even though/ even if/ no matter +wh-...都可以引导妥协状语从句 

turn the lights off 关灯 

turn the lights on开灯 

they were on 灯亮着 

they were out 灯熄灭了 

6. He also said that he had found five empty whisky bottles which the ghost must have drunk the night before. 

which引导定语从句修饰bottles，从句若是独立成句是：

The ghost must have drunk five empty whisky bottles. 而鬼魂喝的是酒，因此句子中的5个瓶子指的是5瓶酒。

这是一种借喻的修辞方式。

the night before 前一天晚上， last night 昨天晚上

the week before 前一个礼拜， last week 上个礼拜 

the day before 前一天， yesterday 昨天 

the next day 第二天， tomorrow 明天 

直接引语变成间接引语时间状语要改变。

now——>then，last night——>the night before，two days ago——>two days before/earlier，today——>that day，tonight——>that night，tomorrow——>the next/following day，last night——>the night before等。

7. When I suggested that some villagers must have come in for a free drink, Mr. Thompson shook his head.

that引导宾语从句 

must have done… 表示对发生完的事情比较有把握的判断. 

for+n. 表某人的目的  

eg. He went home for lunch. 他回家用饭了。

for + v.-ing 表某物的用途  

eg. The cake is for eating. 这蛋糕是用来吃的。

free免费的，不要钱的，无税的，免税的（超级较级）

eg. I’ve got free tickets to the concert. Do you want one?

  我有音乐会的免费的票，你要一张吗？

eg. You’ll get a free gift of a glass if you buy this whiskey now.  

   如果你此刻买这种威士忌酒的话，你将取得免费的一杯。

duty-free 免税的

8. … Mr. Thompson shook his head. The villagers have told him that they will not accept the pub even if he gives it away. 

even if/ even though引导妥协状语从句 

eg. Even if you don’t like wine, try a glass of this. （even if表妥协）    就算你不喜欢饮酒，你也来一杯尝尝。

 比较if引导的条件句 

eg. If you like wine, try a glass of this. （if 表示条件） 如果你喜欢饮酒的话，就来一杯尝尝。

 give away 

1） 送掉,免费给予,赠送  

eg. Even if he give it away. 即便白送人的话。

eg. He gave all his lands away to the city. 他把所有田地都送给政府了。

2） （不经意地）泄露 （秘密） 

eg. He is sure to give away your secret. 他肯定会泄露你的秘密的。

give off散发,发出（光,烟,气味等）  

eg. Those wild flowers give off a nice smell. 那些野花发出芳香的香味。

give in屈服 

eg：

The mother gave in and bought a toy for her child. 妈妈妥协了，给她的孩子买了个玩具。

give out 分派,分发  

give out handbills发传单 

give up放弃 

eg. You shouldn’t give up hope. 你不该该放弃希望。
