Notallemployersarethatshallow-butit'snosecretweareacultureconsumedbyimage.Econonustshavelongrecognizedwhat'sbeendubbedthe"beautypremium"-theideathatprettypeople,whatevertheiraspirations,tendtodobetterin,well,almosteverything.Handsomemenearn,onaverage,5percentmorethantheirless-attractivecounterparts(good-lookingwomenearn4percentmore),prettypeoplegetmoreattentionfromteachers,bosses,andmentors,evenbabiesstarelongeratgood-lookingfaces(andwestarelongeratgood-lookingbabies).Acoupleofdecadesago,whentheeconomywasthriving,wemighthavebrushedoffthosestatisticsassuperficial.Butnow,there'sagrowingbundleofresearchtoshowthatourbiasagainsttheunattractive-our"beautybias,"-ismorepervasivethanever.Andwhenitcomestotheworkplace,it'slooks,notmerit,thatalltoooftenrule.

Considerthefollowing:

overhiscareer,agood-lookingmanwillmakesome$250,000morethanhisleast-attractivecounterpart,accordingtoeconomistDanielHamermesh;13percentofwomen,accordingtotheAmericanSocietyofPlasticSurgeons,saythey'dconsidercosmeticsurgeryifitmadethemmorecompetitiveatwork.Bothpointsaredisturbing,certainly.Butinthecurrenteconomy,whenemployershavemorehiringoptionsthanever,looks,itseems,aren'tjustimportant;they'recritical.Newsweeksurveyed202corporatehiringmanagers,fromhuman-resourcesstafftosenior-levelvicepresidents,aswellas964membersofthepublic,onlytoconfirmwhatnoqualified(orunqualified)employeewantstoadmit:

Beautyislinkedtoconfidence;andit'sacombinationoflooksandconfidencethatweoftenequatewithsmarts.Perhapsthere'ssomeevidencetothat:

ifhandsomekidsgetmoreattentionfromteachers,then,sure,maybetheydobetterinschooland,ultimately,atwork.Butthemorelikelyplotiswhatscientistsdubthe"haloeffect"-that,likeapackofuntrainedpuppies,wearecaptivatedbybeauty,blindlyascribingintelligenttraitstogoalongwithit.

Therearevariousforcestoblameformuchofthis,fromaneconomythatallowspickinesstoaplastic-surgeryindustrythatencouragessuperficialnotionsofbeauty.Inreality,it'sameetingpointofculturalforcesthathasleftusclutching,desperately,toanever-evolvingbeautyideal.Today'syoungworkerswererearedonthekindofrealityTVandpopculturethatscreams,againandagain,thateverythingisacandidateforupgrade.We'vewatchedbodiestransformedonExtremeMakeover,facestakenapartandpiecedbacktogetheronIWantaFamousFace.Wecompareourselveswiththeairbrushedimagesinadvertisementsandmagazines,andreadsurveys-thatconfirmourworstfears.Weareaculturemoresexualizedthanever,withtechnologythat'smadeiteasierthaneverto"better"ourselves,warpingourstandardsforwhat'snormal.Plasticsurgeryused-tobefortherichandfamous;todaywe'veleveledtheplayingfieldwithcheapstupidjobs,andoutpatientproceduresyoucangetonyourlunchbreak.Wherethatleadsusisrunningtostandstill:

taughtthatgoodlooksarenolongeragiftbutaceaselesspursuit.

DeborahRhode,aStanfordlawprofessorandauthorofTheBeautyBias,isherselfaninterestingcasestudy.DuringhertermaschairoftheAmericanBarAssociation'scommissiononworkingwomen,shewasstruckbyhowoftenthenation'smostpowerfulfemaleswerestrandedincablinesandlateformeetingsbecause,inheels,walkinganydistancewasoutofthequestion.Thesewereworking,powerful,leadingwomen,shewrites.Whydidtheyinsistonwearingheels?

Sure,somewomenjustlikeheels.Butthereisalsotherealitythathoweverhardmenhaveit-and,fromaneconomicperspective,their"beautypremium"ishigher,sayeconomists-womenwillalwaysfaceadoublebind,expectedtoconformtothebeautystandardsoftheday,yetsimultaneouslycondemnedfordoingso.RecruitersmaythinkwomenlikeLorenzanacangetaheadforshowingofftheirlooks,but47percentalsobelieveit'spossibleforawomantobepenalizedforbeing"toogood-looking."Whetherornotanyofitpaysoff,there'ssomethingterriblywrongwhen6-year-oldsareusingmakeup,whiletheirmothersspendtheequivalentofacollegeeducationjustkeepingtheirfacesintact."Allofthisishappeningagainstabackgroundofmorewomenintheworkplace,inallkindsofjobs,strivingtowardwageequality,"saysHarvardpsychologistNancyEtcoff."Sowe'resurprised-butweshouldn'tbe-howthisbeautycursecontinuestohauntus."
