SomeoftheearliestdiamondsknowncamefromIndia.IntheeighteenthcenturytheywerefoundinBrazil,andin1866,hugedepositswerefoundnearKimberleyinSouthAfrica.Thoughevidenceofextensivediamonddepositshasrecently,beenfoundinSouthAfrica,thecontinentofAfricastillproducesnearlyalltheworld'ssupplyofthesestones.

Afullycut'brilliant'diamondhas58facets,orfaces,regularlyarranged.Forcuttingorfaceting,thestonesarcfixedintocopperholdersandheldagainstawheel,edgedwithamixtureofOilandfinediamonddust,whichisrevolvedatabout2,500revolutionsaminute.AmsterdamandAntwerp,inHollandandBelgiumrespectively,havebeenthecentreofthediamondcuttingandpolishingindustryforoversevencenturies.

Thejewelvalueofbrilliantdiamondsdependsgreatlyontheircolour,or`water'asitiscalled.Theusualcoloursofdiamondsarewhite,yellow,brown,greenorblue-Surroundingrocksandtakeontheircolor.thusblack,redandevenbrightpinkdiamondshaveoccasionallybeenfound.
