Asco-founderofSavetheElephants,hehasalsolearnedtobeanactivist,author,andpolitician.WhenDouglas-HamiltonleftTanzania,inEastAfrica,in1970tostudyatOxfordUniversityinBritain,heleftbehind"anelephants'paradise（乐园）."Butwhenhereturnedin1972,thecountry'snationalparkslookedmorelikeawarzone.Douglas-Hamiltonoftenfoundmoredeadelephantsthanlivingones.
