Asco-founderofSavetheElephants,hehasalsolearnedtobeanactivist,author,andpolitician.WhenDouglas-HamiltonleftTanzania,inEastAfrica,in1970tostudyatOxfordUniversityinBritain,heleftbehind"anelephants'paradise(乐园)."Butwhenhereturnedin1972,thecountry'snationalparkslookedmorelikeawarzone.Douglas-Hamiltonoftenfoundmoredeadelephantsthanlivingones.

Elephantshaveasocietycontrolledbyfemaleelephantsandtravelinfamilies.In2009,heworkedtosaveararegroupofdesertelephantsinMalifromtheworstdryweatherinMali'shistory.Therehavebeenothersuccesses,particularlyinEastandSouthernAfrica.Douglas—Hamiltonhasproposed(提议)theideaofamobilenationalpark,wheretheprotectedlandwouldfollowelephantsastheytravel.Nocountryhasyetacceptedit.
