ThenovelcentersontheBennetfamily,consistingofthebookishMrBennet,hiswife,awomansomewhatlackinginsocialgracesandprimarilyconcernedwithherfamily'sfortunes,andtheirfivedaughters.Theyoungest,Lydia,mostlytakesafterMrsBennet;theeldest,Jane,iskind-heartedandproper;andthecentralcharacter,ElizabethBennet,isthesecond-eldestandshemostlytakesafterherfather,sharinghiskeenwitandoccasionallysarcasticoutlook.
ThenarrativeopenswithMrBingley,awealthy,charismaticandsocialyoungbachelor,movingintoNetherfieldParkintheneighbourhoodoftheBennetfamily.MrBingleyissoonwellreceived,whilehisfriendMrDarcymakesalessfavorablefirstimpressionbyappearingproudandcondescendingataballthattheyattend(hedetestsdancingandisnotmuchforlightconversation).MrBingleysinglesoutJaneforparticularattention,anditsoonbecomesapparentthattheyhaveformedanattachmenttoeachother,thoughJanedoesnotalterherconductforhim,confessinghergreathappinessonlytoLizzie.Bycontrast,DarcyslightsElizabeth,whooverhearsandjokesaboutitdespitefeelingabuddingresentment.

AtaballgivenbyMrBingleyatNetherfield,MrDarcybecomesawareofageneralexpectationthatMrBingleyandJanewillmarry,andtheBennetfamily,withtheexceptionofJaneandElizabeth,makeapublicdisplayofpoormannersanddecorum.Thefollowingmorning,MrCollinsproposesmarriagetoElizabeth,whorefuseshim,muchtohermother'sdistress.MrCollinsrecoversandpromptlybecomesengagedtoElizabeth'sclosefriendCharlotteLucas,ahomelywomanwithfewprospects.MrBingleyabruptlyquitsNetherfieldandreturnstoLondon,devastatingJane,andElizabethbecomesconvincedthatMrDarcyandCarolineBingleyhavecolludedtoseparatehimfromJane.
Inthespring,ElizabethvisitsCharlotteandMrCollinsinKent.ElizabethandherhostsarefrequentlyinvitedtoRosingsPark,homeofLadyCatherinedeBourgh,Darcy'saunt;coincidentally,Darcyalsoarrivestovisit.ElizabethmeetsDarcy'scousin,ColonelFitzwilliam,whovouchesforDarcy'sloyalty,usingasanexamplehowDarcyhadrecentlysteppedinonbehalfofafriend,whohadformedanattachmenttoawomanagainstwhom"thereweresomeverystrongobjections."ElizabethisastonishedtodiscoverthatsaidfriendwasnoneotherthanMrBingley,andherdislikeofDarcyhardensfurther.ThussheisofnomoodtoacceptwhenDarcyarrivesand,quiteunexpectedly,confessesloveforherandbegsherhandinmarriage.Elizabethrebukeshim,andaheateddiscussionfollows;shechargeshimwithdestroyinghersister'shappiness,withtreatingMrWickhamdisgracefully,andwithhavingconductedhimselftowardsherinanarrogant,ungentleman-likemanner.MrDarcy,shocked,ultimatelyrespondswithalettergivingagoodaccountof(mostof)hisactions:
Wickhamhadexchangedhislegaciesforacashpayment,onlytoreturnaftergamblingawaythemoneytoreclaimtheforfeitedinheritance;hethenattemptedtoelopewithDarcy'syoungsisterGeorgiana,therebytocaptureherfortune.RegardingJane,DarcyclaimshehadobservednoreciprocalinterestinJaneforBingley,andhadassumedhernottobeinlovewithhim.Inadditiontothis,hecitesthe"wantofpropriety"inthebehaviourofMrsBennetandherthreeyoungerdaughters.Elizabeth,whohadpreviouslydespairedovertheseverybehaviors,isforcedtoadmitthetruthofMrDarcy'sobservations,andbeginstowonderwhethershehasmisjudgedhim.
ElizabethtellsherfatherthatDarcywasresponsibleforunitingLydiaandWickham.ThisisoneofthetwoearliestillustrationsofPrideandPrejudice.[4]Theclothingstylesreflectthetimetheillustrationwasengraved(the1830s),notthetimethenovelwaswrittenorset.
Somemonthslater,ElizabethandherauntandUncleGardinervisitPemberley,Darcy'sestate,believinghewillbeabsentfortheday.Hereturnsunexpectedly,andthoughsurprised,heisgraciousandwelcoming.HetreatstheGardinerswithgreatcivility.DarcyintroducesElizabethtohissister,andElizabethbeginstorealizeherattractiontohim.Theirre-acquaintanceiscutshort,however,bythenewsthatLydiahasrunawaywithMrWickham.ElizabethandtheGardinersreturntoLongbourn,whereElizabethgrievesthatherrenewedacquaintancewithMrDarcywillendasaresultofhersister'sdisgrace.
LydiaandWickhamaresoonfound,thenmarriedbytheclergy;theyvisitLongbourn,whereLydialetsslipthatMrDarcywasinattendanceatherweddingbutthatthiswastohavebeenasecret.Elizabethisabletodiscover,fromherauntMrs.Gardiner,thatinfactMr.Darcywasresponsibleforfindingthecoupleandnegotiatingtheirmarriage,atgreatpersonalandmonetaryexpense.ElizabethisshockedbutisunabletodwellfurtheronthetopicduetoMrBingley'sreturnandsubsequentproposaltoJane,whoimmediatelyaccepts.
LadyCatherinedeBourghlaterburstsinonLongbourn;intendingtothwartlocalrumour,shewarnsElizabethagainstmarryingMrDarcy,havinglongagodeterminedhimtomarryherowndaughter.Elizabethrefusesherdemands.Disgusted,LadyCatherineleavesanddropsbytoinformhernephewonElizabeth'sabominablebehaviour.However,thislendshopetoDarcythatElizabeth'sopinionofhimmayhavechanged.HetravelstoLongbournandproposesagain,andthistime,Elizabethaccepts.
