TheAmericanwriterJ.D.Salingerisknownforhisreclusive(隐居的)nature.Hehasnotgivenaninterviewsince1974,orpublishedanynewworksince1965.Salinger’sentirepublishedworksconsistofonenoveland13shortstories,allwrittenintheperiod1948-1959.In1997,arumourstartedthatSalingerwasgoingtobringoutthefirstbookversionofhislastpublishedstory.Fansbecameveryexcited.However,becauseofthepublicity,Salingerquicklyrecededfromthearrangement.

 Ironically(讽刺地)forafuturewriter,whenhewasatcollegeoneofhisprofessorsinsistedhewastheworstEnglishstudentinthehistoryofthecollege.Beforewritinghisfamousbook,hehadonlypublishedafewshortstoriesinmagazines.

Salingerestablishedhisreputationwithasinglenovel,TheCatcherintheRye(1951),animmediatebestsellerwhichstillsells250,000copiesperyear.Themaincharacter,HoldenCaulfield,isasensitive,rebellious(叛逆的)teenagerexperiencingthegrowingpainsofhighschool.

Salingerdidnotdomuchtohelppublicisehismasterpieceandaskedthathisphotographshouldnotbeusedinconnectionwithit.ThepublicattentionwhichfollowedthesuccessofthebookledhimtomovefromNewYorktothefarawayhillsofCornish,NewHampshire.Sincethelate1960shehastriedtoescapepublicity.In1974hetoldareporterthathelikedtowritebutthathewroteforhimselfandhisownpleasure.

Later,hetriedtostopthepublicationofabiographywhichincludedlettershehadwrittentootherauthorsandfriends.In2000hisdaughterpublishedabiography.Initshestatedherfatherwasnotarecluse.Shesaidhetravelledoftenandhadfriendsallovertheworld.Sheaddedthatheenjoyedbeingwithpeopleandwasfriendlyexceptwherepublicityandcelebrityareconcerned.

SalingerrefusedtosellthemovierightstoanyofhisstoriestoHollywoodandwouldnotallowanyofhisworkstobeinvolvedwithfilm.
