TheAmericanwriterJ.D.Salingerisknownforhisreclusive（隐居的）nature.Hehasnotgivenaninterviewsince1974,orpublishedanynewworksince1965.Salinger’sentirepublishedworksconsistofonenoveland13shortstories,allwrittenintheperiod1948-1959.In1997,arumourstartedthatSalingerwasgoingtobringoutthefirstbookversionofhislastpublishedstory.Fansbecameveryexcited.However,becauseofthepublicity,Salingerquicklyrecededfromthearrangement.

Salingerestablishedhisreputationwithasinglenovel,TheCatcherintheRye（1951）,animmediatebestsellerwhichstillsells250,000copiesperyear.Themaincharacter,HoldenCaulfield,isasensitive,rebellious（叛逆的）teenagerexperiencingthegrowingpainsofhighschool.
Salingerdidnotdomuchtohelppublicisehismasterpieceandaskedthathisphotographshouldnotbeusedinconnectionwithit.ThepublicattentionwhichfollowedthesuccessofthebookledhimtomovefromNewYorktothefarawayhillsofCornish,NewHampshire.Sincethelate1960shehastriedtoescapepublicity.In1974hetoldareporterthathelikedtowritebutthathewroteforhimselfandhisownpleasure.
