ArthurConanDoyle,thesonofCharlesDoyleandMaryFoley,wasborninEdinburghon22ndMayfatherwasanalcoholicandthefamilywasalwaysshortofmoney.At
school,ArthurdevelopedastronginterestinthebookswrittenbySirWalterScottandEdgarAllanPoe.HestudiedatEdinburghUniversityandhelpedtofundhiscoursebyworkingasasurgeononfollowingyearheworkedonMayumba,apassengershipboundforWestAfrica.OnthisvoyageConanDoylenearlydiedoftyphoid.
Onhisreturn,ConanDoylesetupasadoctorinSouthsea,asuburbofPortsmouth.Withveryfewpatients,ConanDoyleattemptedtomakemoneybywritingdetectivestories.Hismaincharacter,SherlockHolmes,wasbasedonDr.JosephBell,asurgeonandcriminalpsychologist,wholecturedatEdinburghinfirmary.In1819ConanDoylepublishedsixSherlockHolmesstoriesinthestrandmagazine.Thefollowingyearhewaspaid1,000forawholeseriesonSherlockHolmes.ConanDoylereallywantedtowritehistoricalnovelslikehishero,SirWalterScott,andin1893decidedtokilloffSherlockHolmesinthe,aftersuffuringfromconsiderablepressurefromhisfans,hereturnedtowritehisbestknowndetectivestoryTheHoundoftheBaskervilles.ArthurConanDoylewasdiedin1934.
TheSolitaryCyclistisatragedyrelatedtoafemalebicyclist.OnedayshecametoHolmes’home,saidthatshewasfollowedbyastrangerandaskedHolmeshelpedher.Atfirst,Holmesdidn’tpayattentiontoit.Butafterhisinvestigation,hefoundthetruthandsavethewomanfromthevillain.TheBerylCoronetisaboutafatherwrongedhissonofstealinghisjewels.Butthefactisthathissonistheonewhoprotectitandthereal
thiefishisniecewhotrustsmost.TheEngineer’sThumbtellsusastoryofahydraulicengineercheatedbyacolonelwhoisarealonestealmoney.Hefoundthesomethingstrangebychanceandiscutthethumb.WiththehelpofHolmes,thepolicefoundthatplace,butunfortunatelythoseguyshaveescaped.TheRed-headedLeaguewritesared-headedpersonhappenedtoaluckyjobthathecandonothinginfourhoursbutgain200dollorsayear.Butaftertwomonthhefoundtheleaguedisappeared.Actually,itisafraud.It’saboutarobbery,butisseenthroughbyHolmes.
Theseentirefourstoriesaresimilarinarespectthatisbecauseoftheobservationthatthesecasescanbeworkedout.Ithoughtthereasonwhythisnovelissosuccessfulisthatthecasesinitareverychangeful.Theycanalwaysgobeyondourmind.Sometimesthecasegetsstuckinsometroubles,andwethoughttheleadingcharacterwillhavenothingtodo,butthenitwillgetoutofit.Sometimesweconsiderthatthecasewilldevelopinthewaywhichweimagine,butithappenedintheoppositeway.Oneofthebrilliantaspectsisthatitishardforustojudgewhoistherealbadperson,what’smorefunnyisthatthepersonwhoweguessisthebadpersonbecauseofmisunderstanding,andistherealgoodmanwhosacrificeshimselfforprotectingsomething.Allthesesidesshowthesuperbtheskilloftheauthorandmeanwhile,theybecomethecharmofthenovel.
AsfarasIamconcernednothingismoreadmirableandsurprisingintheheroSherlockHolmesthanhisprofound
knowledgewhichhascertainlyassistedhimalotwhenhewasstudyingthecase.Accordinghisstories,hehasstudieddifferentkindsofnewspaper,cigarettes,people’sfootprintsandotherspecialthingsaswell.Therefore,heseemstohavethemasteryofanythingrelevanttothecaseshedealswith.Expectforhisbrilliantknowledge,Holmesalsospecializesinarrangingthefactsinorderandthenfindingthefactleadinghimtoagreatdiscoveryoreventhetruthitself.Fromhisspeaking“Evenmysteryhasananswer”wecanreadilyshapetheimpressionofamanwithgreatintelligenceandinflexiblewill.Inthiscase,aftergettingridofunrelatedfactsSherlockHolmeseventuallygraspedtheclueanddiscoveredtheamazingfact.
