(1)informationabouttheauthorandhistimes,(10-20%oftotalwords)

(2)asummaryofthebook(20%-30%oftotalwords).Usually,itiswritteninthepresenttense,

(3)commentsonthebook.(50-70%ofwords)

Youropinionisthemostimportantpartofthereport.Itmaybeeitheryourimmediatereactiontothebookorajudgmentbasedonfurtherstudy.Ineithercase,youropinionshouldbedefiniteandclear.Itshouldbesupportedwithfacts.Youwillwanttocommentoncharacterizations,plot,andrecurringthemes.Compareorcontrastittootherbooksyou’veread.Thediscussionshouldofcoursecenteronthecontentofthebook,buttheauthor’swritingstyleandtechniquesofpresentation,ifinteresting,canalsobetouchedupon.

Therearethreemaincharactersinthenovel.JakeisanAmericanveteranofWorldWarⅠworkingasajournalistinParis,whereheandhisfriendsengageinanendlessroundofdecadentdrinkingandparties.AlthoughJakeisthemoststableofhisfriends,hestruggleswithanguishoverhisloveforLadyBrettAshley,hisimpotence,andthemoralvacuumthatresultedfromthewar.Infact,LadyBrettAshleylovesJake,butsheisunwillingtocommittoarelationshipwithhimbecauseitwillmeangivingupsex.OneofJake’sfiends,Cohn,isquitetakenwithBrett,andhegetsangrywhenJaketellshimthatBrettplanstomarryMike.Brettisunwillingtocommitfullytoanyofthemenwhobecomeinfatuatedwithher,thoughshehasaffairswithanumberofthem.Intheend,Jakeseemstohavereachedamorerealisticappreciationoftheirsituationaswellashisown.

MyComments

Beforethenovelopens,Hemingwayquotestwoepigraphs.Thefirstoneis“Youareallthelostgeneration”.Theotheroneis“Theworldendures,andthesuncontinuestoriseandsetdespitetheinevitablepassageofeachhumangenerationintodeath”.Thesetwoepigraphsproducesanambivalenttone.Ontheonehand,thereishope,becausetherewillbeanewgenerationaftertheaimlessgenerationthatpopulatesTheSunAlsoRises,Ontheotherhand,thereisbitterirony,sinceeverygenerationislost,inonesensebecause,eachgenerationwilleventuallydie.

Inthisnovel,HemingwayportraysthelivesofLostGeneration,thegroupofmenandwomenwhoseearlyadulthoodwasconsumedbyWorldWarI.ThishorifickconflictinWar,setnewstandersfordeathandimmorality.Itshatteredmanypeople’sbeliefsintraditionalvaluesoflove,faith,andmanhood.Withouttheselong-heldnotionstorelyon,theirlivesbecomeaimless.

NearlyallofJake’sfriendsarealcoholics.Wherevertheyhappentobe,theydrink,usuallytoexcess.Often,theirdrinkingisaformofescaptiom.DrunkennessallowJakeandhisfriendstoendurelivesseverelylackinginaffectionandpurpose.Howeveralcoholfrequentlybringsouttheworstintheirmentalandemotionalturmoil.

ThecoversationsamongJakeandhisfriendsarerarelydirectorhoest.Theirfriendshipisfalse.Theyhidetruefeelingsbehindamaskofcivility.Althoughthelegacyofthewartomentsthemall,theyareunabletocommunicatethistorment.Theycantalkaboutthewaronlyinanexcessivelyhumoursortritefashion.Themomentsofhonest,genuinecommunicationgenerallyariseonlywhenthecharactersarefeelingtheirworst.Expressionsoftrueaffection,ontheotherhand,arelimitedalmosttoalloftheircoversations.

AlthoughHemingwayneverexplicitlystatesthatJakeandhisfriends’livesareaimless,orthatthisaimlessnessisaresultofthewar.Instead,heimpliestheseideasthroughhisportrayalofthecharacters’emotionalandmentallives.Thesestandinstarkconrasttothecharacters’surfaceaction.Jakeandhisfriends’constantcarousingdoesnotmakethemhappy.Veryoften,theirmerrymakingisjoylessanddrivenbyalcohol.Atbest,itallowsthemnottothinkabouttheirinnnerlivesoraboutthewar.Althoughtheyspendnearlyalloftheirtimepartyinginonewayoranother,theyremainsorrowfulorunfulfilled.Hence,theirdrinkinganddancingisjustafutiledistraction,apurposelessactivitycharacteristicofawandering,aimlesslife.
