Straussdidnotwanttobeapersonwhosearchedanareaforminerals.Instead,heknewhecouldmakeagoodlivingbysellingsuppliestotheminers.Atfirst,heplannedtosellsewingsuppliesandcloth.3Whenheheardminerscomplainingthattheirclotheswereeasilybrokenortheyusuallytoretheirpocketsduringmining,hedecidedtouseaspecialfabrictomakepantsfortheminers.Thesepantsprovedsopopularthathequicklyranoutofmaterialstomakemore.

In1873,StraussreceivedaletterfromaJewishtailornamedJacobDaviswhohadinventedaprocessofconnectingpocketswithcopperrivets(铆钉).Thismadethepantslastalongtime.BecauseDavisdidnothavethemoneytopatenthisidea,heofferedtoshareitwithStraussifStrausswouldagreetopayforthepatent.4.

BythetimeStraussdiedin1902,hehadmadeagreatcontributiontoAmericanfashion.
