PurposeofaCriticalReview
Thecriticalreviewisawritingtaskthatasksyoutosummarizeandevaluateatext.Thecriticalreviewcanbeofabook,achapter,orajournalarticle.Writingthecriticalreviewusuallyrequiresyoutoreadtheselectedtextindetailandtoalsoreadotherrelatedtextssothatyoucanpresentafairandreasonableevaluationoftheselectedtext.
Whatismeantbycritical?
Atuniversity,tobecriticaldoesnotmeantocriticizeinanegativemanner.Ratheritrequiresyoutoquestiontheinformationandopinionsinatextandpresentyourevaluationorjudgmentofthetext.Todothiswell,youshouldattempttounderstandthetopicfromdifferentperspectives(i.e.readrelatedtexts)andinrelationtothetheories,approachesandframeworksinyourcourse.
Whatismeantbyevaluationorjudgment?
Hereyoudecidethestrengthsandweaknessesofatext.Thisisusuallybasedonspecificcriteria.Evaluatingrequiresanunderstandingofnotjustthecontentofthetext,butalsoanunderstandingofatext’spurpose,theintendedaudienceandwhyitisstructuredthewayitis.
Whatismeantbyanalysis?
Analyzingrequiresseparatingthecontentandconceptsofatextintotheirmaincomponentsandthenunderstandinghowtheseinterrelate,connectandpossiblyinfluenceeachother.
StructureofaCriticalReview
Criticalreviews,bothshort(onepage)andlong(fourpages),usuallyhaveasimilarstructure.Checkyourassignmentinstructionsforformattingandstructuralspecifications.Headingsareusuallyoptionalforlongerreviewsandcanbehelpfulforthereader.
Introduction
Thelengthofanintroductionisusuallyoneparagraphforajournalarticlereviewandtwoorthreeparagraphsforalongerbookreview.Includeafewopeningsentencesthatannouncetheauthor(s)andthetitle,andbrieflyexplainthetopicofthetext.Presenttheaimofthetextandsummarizethemainfindingorkeyargument.Concludetheintroductionwithabriefstatementofyourevaluationofthetext.Thiscanbeapositiveornegativeevaluationor,asisusuallythecase,amixedresponse.
Summary
Presentasummaryofthekeypointsalongwithalimitednumberofexamples.Youcanalsobrieflyexplaintheauthor’spurpose/intentionsthroughoutthetextandyoumaybrieflydescribehowthetextisorganized.Thesummaryshouldonlymakeupaboutathirdofthecriticalreview.
Critique
Thecritiqueshouldbeabalanceddiscussionandevaluationofthestrengths,weaknessandnotablefeaturesofthetext.Remembertobaseyourdiscussiononspecificcriteria.Goodreviewsalsoincludeothersourcestosupportyourevaluation(remembertoreference).
Youcanchoosehowtosequenceyourcritique.Herearesomeexamplestogetyoustarted:
•Mostimportanttoleastimportantconclusionsyoumakeaboutthetext.
•Ifyourcritiqueismorepositivethannegative,thenpresentthenegativepointsfirstandthepositivelast.
•Ifyourcritiqueismorenegativethanpositive,thenpresentthepositivepointsfirstandthenegativelast.
•Iftherearebothstrengthsandweaknessforeachcriterionyouuse,youneedtodecideoverallwhatyourjudgmentis.Forexample,youmaywanttocommentonakeyideainthetextandhavebothpositiveandnegativecomments.Youcouldbeginbystatingwhatisgoodabouttheideaandthenconcedeandexplainhowitislimitedinsomeway.Whilethisexampleshowsamixedevaluation,overallyouareprobablybeingmorenegativethanpositive.
•Inlongreviews,youcanaddresseachcriteriayouchooseinaparagraph,includingbothnegativeandpositivepoints.Forveryshortcriticalreviews(onepageorless)whereyourcommentswillbebriefer,includeaparagraphofpositiveaspectsandanotherofnegative.

Paraphrasingmeansputtingitintoyourownwords.Paraphrasingoffersanalternativetousingdirectquotationsinyoursummary(andthecritique)andcanbeanefficientwaytointegrateyoursummarynotes.
