一、立论依据

(选题的研究意义、国内外研究现状分析)

Colorisaperceptionofpeopletotheobjectiveworld.Therearegreatnumbersofcolortermsinhumanlanguagerecordingourcolorfulword.Thesecolortermsareoftenusedinhumanlanguageandareendowedwithrichemotionalelementsandculturalconnotationsaswellastheaffectiveandsocialsignificance.Inevitably,differentconnotationsareaddedtocolors.Itcan’tbedeniedthatalllanguageshaverichandabundantcolorwords,andforeachlanguagethecolorwordscarryspecificmeaning.

G.Leechputsforwardhisfamous“seventypesofmeaning”inhisSemantics:

TheStudyofMeaningin1974.Itisconsideredasoneofthegreatestlinguisticworksoftheworld.Theseventypesofmeaningareconceptualmeaning,connotativemeaning,socialmeaning,affectivemeaning,reflectivemeaning,collocativemeaningandthematicmeaning.Besides,connotativemeaning,socialmeaning,affectivemeaning,reflectivemeaningandcollocativemeaningarealsoknownasassociativemeaning.

Althoughthebasicmeaningofacolortermcanbethesameintwodifferentlanguages,thesemanticmeaningandthereferentialmeaningitbearsintwodifferentlanguagesmaynotalwaysbethesame.AsJ.LyonspointsoutinhisIntroductiontoTheoreticalLinguisticspublishedin1977,thenumberofthenamedcolortermsissolimitedincomparisontothevisuallightspectrum.Itseemsthatthecolortermswenamedarejustsmallspotsonthelightspectrum.Sinceweusethelimitedtermstoexpresssuchanextensivescopeofcolors,theremustbesomecertainpointsbywhichweidentifyacolortermonefromanother.ThencomesJ.Lyons’stheorythatduetotherespectiveculturalandhistoricalbackgroundandcustomandtradition,thepointsbywhichweidentifycolorsonefromanotheronthelightspectrumcanbedifferent.

TherearealsosomefamousdomesticworksfocusonthestudyofcomparisonofcolortermsbetweenChineseandEnglish.

OneofthegreatestChineselinguistsWuTiepingexplainshisideaaboutsomegeneralcharactersofcolortermsindifferentlanguagesinthefamousFuzzyLinguisticspublishedin1999.Theauthorindicatesthatthebasicmeaningofacolortermbearsthesamethingindifferentlanguagesandthebasicmeaningofacolortermisanindicationofthecoloritself.Theauthorgivessomephysicalstudiesasevidences.Thevisualsystembywhichpeopleobservecolorhasnophysiologicaldifferences.Thatmeanspeoplefromvariousareasmayhavevariousthoughtsbuttheyhaveexactlythesameabilityintherecognitionofcolors.WuTieping’sFuzzylinguisticsoffersabasicpointofviewoncolortermssemanticmeaningstudy.

Therearealsosomeworksfocusingonthesocialandhistoricalfactors.Thesefactorshaveaneffectontheformingofthedifferences.InCultureandTranslationwhichwaspublishedin2000,theauthorBaiJingyupointsoutthatreligiouscultureandspiritshaveagreateffectonthelanguageofacountry.Inwesterncountries,influencedbyChristianity,whiteisthoughttobethecolorofbeauty,purityandloyalty.InChinese,affectedbyBuddhism,whiteisalwaysusedtoshowrespecttodeadpeople.In“Color-termsandExpressionofCultureConception”,theauthoralsomentionssomefactorsaboutthat.Itindicatesthatpoliticalfactors,customfactorsandeconomicfactorsarealsoinfluentialtotheformingofthedifferences.Theworkalsoshowsthateachofthenationshasitsownpointsofviewoncolortermswhichbearvividcharacteristicsofitsownnationalculture.Thatistosay,thesamecolorunderdifferentculturesmaybeardifferentmeaningsfromeachother.

BasedonthetheoriesputforwardbyWuTieping,J.LyonsandLeech,manylinguistsaretryingtosumupallthemeaningsacolorcanbear.Astheresearchgoeson,wemayfindthatcolortermsmayhavethemeaningmorethanjustasanindicationofitself.YangWenquanandLiJingsuggestthesemanticandreferentialmeaningofcolortermsintheir“Color-termsandExpressionofCultureConception”publishedin2003.Theauthorsindicatethatduetodifferentlanguagehabits,historicbackgrounds,andtraditionalcustomsandsoon,therearemanydifferencesintheuseofcolorsandcolorwordsaswellasintheunderstandingandmeaningofthesamecolor.Therefore,itispracticallyusefultoknowandstudythedifferences,thuspromotingtheculturalcommunicationandapplicationpractice.

InCulturalExaminationofChineseColorTermspublishedin2003,LuoFengdiscussestheemergenceanddevelopmentofcolortermsinChinesefromdifferentperspectives.TheyaremainlysocialculturalconnotationofcolortermsinChineseandrelationshipbetweencolortermsandChinesetraditionalculture.ThisbookcontainsthreechaptersandisconsiderablyvaluableforresearchesoncolortermsinChinese.ItisworthmentioningthatinchapteronetheauthordiscussescolortermsrelyingonprintinganddyeingtechnologyandceramicglazewhicharethesymbolsofChinesetraditionalculture.Besides,throughclassificationandsummaryofcolortermsinmodernChinese,theauthorstatesthecloserelationbetweenconnotationmeaningsofcolortermsandsocialculturalbackground.

Publishedin2003,theauthorLiRushouoffersabriefintroductionontheassociativemeaningofwordsinhis“AssociativeMeaninginSocialandCulturalPerspective”.Theauthorindicatesthatwordssharingthesameconceptualmeaningmaydifferinassociativemeaning.Lotsoflinguistsdoalotofworkstoexploretheassociativemeaninginsocialandculturalcontent,analysethedifferencesoftheassociativemeaninginEnglishandChinesewordsorphrases,inattempttohaveabetterunderstandingoftheassociativemeaning,which,ifnotproperlyinterpreted,maymakecommunicativebarriersorleadtocommunicativedisasters.Colortermsareindispensableinhumanlanguages.Becauseofthedistinctionsofculturalbackgroundandpsychology,differentnationshavedifferentassociationsandfeelingstocolorwords.Withthedevelopmentofsocietyandevolutionofhistory,colorwordsnotonlyhavethebasicconceptualmeaningsbutalsohavedeepconnotativemeaning.

 

二、研究方案

1.本研究的特色与创新之处

Althoughtherearesomanypapersandworksamongthestudyofcolortermsbothathomeandabroad,mostofthestudiesarefromtheaspectsofthesemanticmeaningorconnotativemeaningofthecolorterm.Basedontheresearcheshavebeendoneinpaststudies,thisthesismainlyfocusonthedifferentaffectiveintentionsofthecolortermredinChineseandEnglish.

Thisthesismainlyfocusedontheaffectiveintentionofthecolorterm“red”.Affectivemeaningreflectsthepersonalfeelingofthespeaker,includinghisattitudetothelistener,orhisattitudetothethingsheistalkingabout.Inanotherword,whatyouaresayingiswhatyouarethinking.Fromthewordsoneusedtodescribeacertainthing,thelistenerorreadercantelltheattitudeorfeelingthespeakerholdstoit.Theuseofcolortermsinone'sexpressioncanbeakindofdescriptionwithobscurity.Byusingcolortermsintheirexpression,thespeakeroften,onpurposeornot,hidesandcovershisattitudeorfeelingtowardthetopic.But,bystudyingthemeaningbehindthecolorterms,itcanbeeasyforthelistenertofindouttherealopinionthespeakerholds.Duetothesimilaritiesanddifferencesoftheethnicculturebackground,especiallythehistoricalandthepoliticalbackground,theaffectivemeaningthecolorterm“red”baredcanbesimilaraswellasdifferent,evenopposite.

2、研究目标、研究内容和拟解决的关键问题

Theaimofthisthesisistomakeacomparativestudyontheaffectiveintentionsofthecolorterm“red”inChineseandEnglish.Italsodealswiththefactorssuchasethnicculturebackground,especiallythehistoricalandthepoliticalbackground,thatleadstothedifferentaffectiveintentionsofthecolorterm“red”intwolanguages.

ThecontentofthestudymainlyreferstothecorporaselectedfromthecorpusbothofEnglishandChineseincludingalmostalltypesoftext.Corpusreferstoacollectionorbodyofknowledgeorevidence;especiallyacollectionofrecordedutterancesusedasabasisforthedescriptiveanalysisofalanguage.Inordertogetamorespecificandaccuratematerialsofthisstudy,bothofthewrittenandspokencorpusshouldbetakenastheresourcesofthisresearch.Thecorpusshouldbeclassifiedundertheguidanceoftheoutlineofthethesis.

3、拟采取的研究方法、技术路线、实验方案及可行性分析

Thisthesiswilladoptcontentanalysisasthemethodofresearch.TheresourcesofthestudycontentareallfromthecorpusbothinEnglishandChinese.Corpusanalysisisthemainresourceofthisstudy.Theadvantageofcorporaistomakealargequantityoftextualdiscourseavailabletosearchesforparticularphenomenaofinterest.Thisadvantageisespeciallygreatforlinguisticphenomena,asthetopicofthisthesis,whosefrequencyofoccurrenceorrangeofinstantiationsistheissue.Thus,corpusresearchcandeterminethefrequencywithwhichaparticularexpressionisusedinvariouscontexts.Mostlexicalcorporatodayarepart-of-speech-tagged.Howeverevencorpuslinguistswhoworkwithunannotatedplaintextinevitablyapplysomemethodtoisolatesalientterms.Insuchsituationsannotationandabstractionarecombinedinalexicalsearch.
