Thescientistsasked52studyvolunteerstoaddaweekly15-minutewalktotheirnormalschedules.Allofthemwerephysicallyhealthyandpsychologicallywell-adjusted,withlittleanxietyordepression.Thentheywererandomlydividedintotwogroups.One,asacontrolgroup,wasaskedtostartwalking,preferablyoutside,butgivenfewotherrequirements.Theothergroupwasnotonlyaskedtowalkonceaweek,butalsowereinstructedinhowtocultivateaweastheywalked.“Basically,wetoldthemtotrytogoandwalksomewherenew,sincenoveltyhelpstocultivateawe,”saysVirginiaSturm,anassociateprofessorwholedthenewstudy.

Bothgroupswereaskedtotakeafewselfies(自拍)duringtheirwalksanduploadthemto

alabwebsiteandalsocompleteadailyonlineassessmentoftheircurrentmood.Aftereightweeks,thescientistscomparedthegroups’responsesandphotos.Notsurprisingly,theawewalkersfelthappier,lessupsetandmoresociallyconnectedthanthecontrolgroupmembers.
