Whilelargenumbersofpassengerpigeonswererecordedinthelatenineteenthcentury,thepopulationdecreasedrapidly,andthelastwildbirdwasshotin1904.Thesuddendisappearanceofthebirdremainsamystery,butanexplanationisfoundinitshabitofnestingandmovinginlargenumbers.Farmers,whoconsideredthempests,founditeasytocatchhundredsatatimeinnets.Also,aspassengerpigeonsweretastygamebirds,markethuntersshothundredsofthousandsontheirnestinggrounds.By1900thepassengerpigeonwasalreadyrare.

RobertFrostwasoneofAmerica’sbestknownandmosthonoredrealisticliteraryfigures(文学家).Buthisfamecamelateinhislife.

HewasborninSanFrancisco,Californiain1874.HelivedinCaliforniaduringhisearlychildhood.HewasnamedafterthechiefSoutherngeneralinAmerica’sCivilWar.Theofficer’snamewasRobertEdwardLee.ThepoetwasnamedRobertLeeFrost,becausehisfatherwantedtohonorthegeneral.

SomeoneonceaskedanotherAmericanwriter,ErnestHemingway,howtobecomeawriter.Thebestthing,hesaid,wastohaveanunhappychildhood.Ifthisistrue,RobertFrost’schildhoodwasunhappyenoughtomakehimaverygoodpoet.RobertFrost’sfatherwasareporterwhowantedtobeapolitician.Heoftendranktoomuchwineandbecameangry.Robertwasthevictim(受害者)ofhisanger.

RobertFrostfinishedhighschoolin1891.Afterhighschool,Robert’sgrandfatherofferedtopayhiscostsatDartmouthCollege.ButRobertlefttheschoolafterafewmonths.Hedidnotlikeit.Hespentthenextfewyearsworkingatdifferentjobs.Atonetime,heworkedinafactory.Later,herepairedshoes.Hewasateacher.Hewasareporter.Always,hewrotepoetry(诗歌).

RobertFrostattendedHarvardUniversityfortwoyears.Afterthat,hereturnedtothemanyjobsheheldbefore.Forawhile,FrosttriedtotakecareofafarminthestateofNewHampshire.Hewasnotasuccessfulfarmer.Andhecontinuedtowritepoetry.Hesaidthatuntil1930,heearnedonlyabouttendollarsayearfromwriting.

In1912,hedecidedtotrytomakeanewstart.HetookhisfamilytoBritain.Thecostoflivingwaslow.InBritain,Frostfoundapublisher(出版商)forhisfirstbookofpoems.ThebookwascalledABoy’sWill.Whenitappearedin1913,FrostreceivedhighpraisefromBritishreaders.Praisewassomethinghehadnotreceivedinhisowncountry.
