In2001,MichaelPhelpsbeganhisassaultontherecordbooks,becomingtheyoungestswimmertobreakaworldrecordinwinningthe200-meterbutterflyin1minute54.92seconds(1:

54.92)atthenationalchampionships.FourmonthslaterinJapan,heloweredthemarkattheWorldChampionshipsby34-100thsofonesecond(1:

Thetwo-timeOlympianbecamethefirstathleteevertowineightmedalstotalatanon-boycottedOlympicGames,collectingsixgoldandtwosilversin2004inAthens.Phelpssetfourindividualworldrecordsandwonsevengoldmedalsatthe2007WorldChampionshipstobecomethewinningestathleteinWorldChampionshiphistory.

PhelpssayshissuccessandexperiencehaspreparedhimwellforBeijing.
