BarryBrownformerlyservedasaprofessorwiththeUniversityofCalifornia,SanDiego.Whilethere,heworkedonaprojectwithEricLaurierfromtheUniversityofEdinburgh.ThetwomenstudiedtheeffectsofGPSdevicesondrivingbyplacingcamerasinpeople’scars.Theywroteapaperbasedontheirresearch.Itiscalled“TheNormal,NaturalTroublesofDrivingwithGPS.”ItlistsseveralareaswhereGPSsystemscancauseconfusionfordrivers.Theseincludemapsthatareoutdated,incorrectordifficulttounderstand.TheyalsoincludetimingissuesrelatedtowhenGPScommandsaregiven.
