Forthestudy,researchersattheAlbertEinsteinCollegeofMedicineinNewYorkselected34adults,menandwomen.Allofthevolunteershadplayedsoccersincechildhoodandnowcompetedyearroundinadultsoccerleagues.Eachfilledoutadetailedquestionnairedevelopedespeciallyforthisstudytodeterminehowmanytimestheyhadheadedasoccerballinthepreviousyear,aswellaswhethertheyhadexperiencedanyknownconcussions(脑震荡)inthepast.

Thentheplayerscompletedcomputerizedtestsoftheirmemoryandotherlearningskillsandhadtheirbrainsscanned,usingacomplicatednewMRItechniquewhichcanfindstructuralchangesinthebrainthatcan’tbeseenduringmostscans.

AccordingtothedatatheypresentedataRadiologicalSocietyofNorthAmericameetinglastmonth,theresearchersfoundthattheplayerswhohadheadedtheballmorethanabout1,100timesintheprevious12monthsshowedsignificantlossofwhitematterinpartsoftheirbrainsinvolvedwithmemory,attentionandtheprocessingofvisualinformation,comparedwithplayerswhohadheadedtheballfewertimes.

Thispatternofwhitematterlossis“similartothoseseenintraumatic(外伤的)braininjury”,likethatafteraseriousconcussion,theresearchersreported,eventhoughonlyoneoftheseplayerswasreportedtohaveeverexperiencedaconcussion.

Theplayerswhohadheadedtheballabout1,100timesormoreinthepastyearwerealsogenerallyworseatrecallinglistsofwordsreadtothem,forgettingorfumblingthewordsfarmoreoftenthanplayerswhohadheadedtheballless.
