Perhapswillfully,itmaybeeasiertothinAaboutsuchlengthytimescalesthanaboutthemoreimmediatefuture.Thepotentialevolutionoftoday'stechnology,anditssocialconsequences,isdazzlinglycomplicated,andit'sperhapsbestlefttosciencefictionwritersandfuturologiststoeGplorethemanypossibilitieswecanenvisage.That'sonereasonwhywehavelaunchedArc,anewpublicationdedicatedtothenearfuture.

ButtaAealongerviewandthereisasurprisingamountthatwecansaywithconsiderableassurance.Assooften,thepastholdstheAeytothefuture:

wehavenowidentifiedenoughofthelong-termpatternsshapingthehistoryoftheplanet,andourspecies,tomaAeevidence-basedforecastsaboutthesituationsinwhichourdescendantswillfindthemselves.
