England,NorthernIreland,ScotlandandWales.Therearethreedevolvednationaladministrations,eachwithvaryingpowers,situatedinBelfast,CardiffandEdinburgh;thecapitalsofNorthernIreland,WalesandScotlandrespectively.AssociatedwiththeUK,butnotconstitutionallypartofit,arethreeCrownDependenciesandfourteenoverseasterritories.TheseareremnantsoftheBritishEmpirewhich,atitsheightin1922,encompassedalmostaquarteroftheworld'slandsurfaceandwasthelargestempireinhistory.Britishinfluencecanstillbeobservedinthelanguage,cultureandlegalsystemsofmanyofitsformerterritories.

TheUKisadevelopedcountryandhastheworld'ssixth-largesteconomybynominalGDPandseventh-largesteconomybypurchasingpowerparity.Itwastheworld'sfirstindustrializedcountryandtheworld'sforemostpowerduringthe19thandearly20thcenturiesalthoughtheeconomicandsocialcostoftwoworldwarsandthedeclineofitsempireinthelatterhalfofthe20thcenturydiminisheditsleadingroleinglobalaffairs.TheUKneverthelessremainsagreatpowerwithleadingeconomic,cultural,military,scientificandpoliticalinfluence.ItisamemberstateoftheEuropeanUnion,apermanentmemberoftheUnitedNationsSecurityCouncil,andisalsoamemberof:

TheUnitedKingdomofGreatBritainandNorthernIrelandusesasitsnationalflagtheroyalbannerknownastheUnionFlagor,popularly,UnionJack.ItconsistsoftheredcrossofSaintGeorge(patronsaintofEngland),edgedinwhite,superimposedontheCrossofStPatrick(patronsaintofIreland),whicharesuperimposedontheSaltireofSaintAndrew(patronsaintofScotland).Wales,however,isnotrepresentedintheUnionFlagbyWales'patronsaint,SaintDavidasatthetimetheflag
