Iwantyoutotakealookatthisbaby.Whatyou'redrawntoarehereyesandtheskinyoulovetotouch.
ButtodayI'mgoingtotalktoyouaboutsomethingyoucan'tsee--what'sgoingonupinthatlittlebrainofhers.Themoderntoolsofneurosciencearedemonstratingtousthatwhat'sgoingonupthereisnothingshortofrocketscience.Andwhatwe'relearningisgoingtoshedsomelightonwhattheromanticwritersandpoetsdescribedasthe"celestialopenness"ofthechild'smind.
WhatweseehereisamotherinIndia,andshe'sspeakingKoro,whichisanewlydiscoveredlanguage.Andshe'stalkingtoherbaby.Whatthismother--andthe800peoplewhospeakKorointheworld--understands[is]that,topreservethislanguage,theyneedtospeakittothebabies.
Andthereinliesacriticalpuzzle.Whyisitthatyoucan'tpreservealanguagebyspeakingtoyouandI,totheadults?
Well,it'sgottodowithyourbrain.Whatweseehereisthatlanguagehasacriticalperiodforlearning.Thewaytoreadthisslideistolookatyourageonthehorizontalaxis.
Andyou'llseeontheverticalyourskillatacquiringasecondlanguage.Babiesandchildrenaregeniusesuntiltheyturnseven,andthenthere'sasystematicdecline.Afterpuberty,wefalloffthemap.Noscientistsdisputethiscurve,butlaboratoriesallovertheworldaretryingtofigureoutwhyitworksthisway
Workinmylabisfocusedonthefirstcriticalperiodindevelopment--andthatistheperiodinwhichbabiestrytomasterwhichsoundsareusedintheirlanguage.Wethink,bystudyinghowthesoundsarelearned,we'llhaveamodelfortherestoflanguage,andperhapsforcriticalperiodsthatmayexistinchildhoodforsocial,emotionalandcognitivedevelopment.
Sowe'vebeenstudyingthebabiesusingatechniquethatwe'reusingallovertheworldandthesoundsofalllanguages.Thebabysitsonaparent'slap,andwetrainthemtoturntheirheadswhenasoundchanges--likefrom"ah"to"ee."Iftheydosoattheappropriatetime,theblackboxlightsupandapandabearpoundsadrum.Asix-montheradoresthetask.
Whathavewelearned?
Well,babiesallovertheworldarewhatIliketodescribeas"citizensoftheworld."Theycandiscriminateallthesoundsofalllanguages,nomatterwhatcountrywe'retestingandwhatlanguagewe'reusing,andthat'sremarkablebecauseyouandIcan'tdothat.
We'reculture-boundlisteners.Wecandiscriminatethesoundsofourownlanguage,butnotthoseofforeignlanguages.Sothequestionarises:
whendothosecitizensoftheworldturnintothelanguage-boundlistenersthatweare?
Andtheanswer:
beforetheirfirstbirthdays.Whatyouseehereisperformanceonthathead-turntaskforbabiestestedinTokyoandtheUnitedStates,hereinSeattle,astheylistenedto"ra"and"la"--soundsimportanttoEnglish,butnottoJapanese.Soatsixtoeightmonthsthebabiesaretotallyequivalent.Twomonthslatersomethingincredibleoccurs.ThebabiesintheUnitedStatesaregettingalotbetter,babiesinJapanaregettingalotworse,butbothofthosegroupsofbabiesarepreparingforexactlythelanguagethattheyaregoingtolearn.
Sothequestionis:
what'shappeningduringthiscriticaltwo-monthperiod?
Thisisthecriticalperiodforsounddevelopment,butwhat'sgoingonupthere?
Sotherearetwothingsgoingon.Thefirstisthatthebabiesarelisteningintentlytous,andthey'retakingstatisticsastheylistentoustalk--they'retakingstatistics.Solistentotwomothersspeakingmotherese--theuniversallanguageweusewhenwetalktokids--firstinEnglishandtheninJapanese.
(Video)EnglishMother:
Ah,Iloveyourbigblueeyes--soprettyandnice.

PatriciaKuhl:
Duringtheproductionofspeech,whenbabieslisten,whatthey'redoingistakingstatisticsonthelanguagethattheyhear.Andthosedistributionsgrow.Andwhatwe'velearnedisthatbabiesaresensitivetothestatistics,andthestatisticsofJapaneseandEnglisharevery,verydifferent.EnglishhasalotofRsandLs.Thedistributionshows.
AndthedistributionofJapaneseistotallydifferent,whereweseeagroupofintermediatesounds,whichisknownastheJapanese"R."Sobabiesabsorbthestatisticsofthelanguageanditchangestheirbrains;itchangesthemfromthecitizensoftheworldtotheculture-boundlistenersthatweare.Butweasadultsarenolongerabsorbingthosestatistics.We'regovernedbytherepresentationsinmemorythatwereformedearlyindevelopment.
Sowhatwe'reseeinghereischangingourmodelsofwhatthecriticalperiodisabout.We'rearguingfromamathematicalstandpointthatthelearningoflanguagematerialmayslowdownwhenourdistributionsstabilize.It'sraisinglotsofquestionsaboutbilingualpeople.Bilingualsmustkeeptwosetsofstatisticsinmindatonceandflipbetweenthem,oneaftertheother,dependingonwhothey'respeakingto.
Soweaskedourselves,canthebabiestakestatisticsonabrandnewlanguage?
AndwetestedthisbyexposingAmericanbabieswho'dneverheardasecondlanguagetoMandarinforthefirsttimeduringthecriticalperiod.Weknewthat,whenmonolingualsweretestedinTaipeiandSeattleontheMandarinsounds,theyshowedthesamepattern.
Sixtoeightmonths,they'retotallyequivalent.Twomonthslater,somethingincrediblehappens.ButtheTaiwanesebabiesaregettingbetter,nottheAmericanbabies.WhatwedidwasexposeAmericanbabiesduringthisperiodtoMandarin.ItwaslikehavingMandarinrelativescomeandvisitforamonthandmoveintoyourhouseandtalktothebabiesfor12sessions.Here'swhatitlookedlikeinthelaboratory.

ButlookatwhathappenedtothebabiesexposedtoMandarinfor12sessions.TheywereasgoodasthebabiesinTaiwanwho'dbeenlisteningfor10-and-a-halfmonths.Whatitdemonstratedisthatbabiestakestatisticsonanewlanguage.Whateveryouputinfrontofthem,they'lltakestatisticson.
Butwewonderedwhatrolethehumanbeingplayedinthislearningexercise.Sowerananothergroupofbabiesinwhichthekidsgotthesamedosage,thesame12sessions,butoveratelevisionsetandanothergroupofbabieswhohadjustaudioexposureandlookedatateddybearonthescreen.Whatdidwedototheirbrains?
Whatyouseehereistheaudioresult--nolearningwhatsoever--andthevideoresult--nolearningwhatsoever.Ittakesahumanbeingforbabiestotaketheirstatistics.Thesocialbrainiscontrollingwhenthebabiesaretakingtheirstatistics.
Wewanttogetinsidethebrainandseethisthinghappeningasbabiesareinfrontoftelevisions,asopposedtoinfrontofhumanbeings.Thankfully,wehaveanewmachine,magnetoencephalography,thatallowsustodothis.ItlookslikeahairdryerfromMars.Butit'scompletelysafe,completelynon-invasiveandsilent.
