ItisincongruousthatthenumberofBritishinstitutionsofferingMBAcoursesshouldhavegrownby254percent

duringaperiodwhentheeconomyhasbeenslidingintodeeperrecession.Optimists,orthosegiventospeed,

assumptions,mightthinkitmarveloustohavesucharesourceofbusinessschoolgraduatesreadyfortherecovery.

Unfortunately,thereisnowmuchdoubtaboutthevalueofthedegreenotleastamongMBAgraduatesthemselves,

sufferingastheyarefromtheeffectsofrecessionandfacingtheprospectofshrinkingmanagementstructures.

Whatwastakensomeyearsagoasaticketofcertainadmissiontosuccessisnowbeingexposedtothescrutiny

ofcost-consciousemployerswhoseek“can-dos”ratherthan“might-dos”,andwhofeelthatacademiahasnotbeen

sufficientlyappreciativeoftheneedsofindustryoroftheemployers’possiblecontribution.

Itiscurious,giventhenameofthedegree,thatthereshouldbenoleaguetableforUKbusinessschools;no

unanimityaboutwhatthedegreeshouldencompass;andnoagreedsystemofaccreditation.Surelythereissomething

wrong.Onewonderswhereallthetutorsforthismassiveinfusionofbusinessexpertisecamefromandwhyallthis

mushroomingtookplace.

Perhapscompaniesthatmadelargeinvestmentswouldhavebeenwisertoinvestinalreadyexistingmanagers,

perchedanxiouslyontheirowninternalladders.TheInstituteofManagement’s1992survey,whichrevealedthat

eighty-onepercentofmanagersthoughttheypersonallywouldbemoreeffectiveiftheyreceivedmoretraining,

suggeststhatthismightbethecase.Thereis,too,thefactthattrainingalonedoesnotmakesuccessfulmanagers.

Theyneedtheinherentqualifications.Ofcharacter;adegreeofself-subjugation;and,aboveall,theabilityto

communicateandlead;moresonow,whenempowermentisabuzzwordthatisatleastgeneratinggenuflexions,ifnot

totalconviction.

Onecaneasilythinkofpeople,somecomparativelyunlettered,whoarenowlaudedcaptainsofindustry.Wemay,

therefore,notneedtobetooconcernedaboutthefallinapplicationsforbusinessschoolplaces,oreventhedoubt

aboutMBAs.Theproliferationandsubsequentquestioningmayhavebeenaninevitableevolution.Ifthe

ManagementCharterInitiative,nowexploringtheintroductionofaseniormanagementqualification,issuccessful,

therewillbeapowerfulcorrective.

Webelievenowthatmanagementisallaboutchange.Onehopestherewillbesomeofthatinrelationship

betweenmanagementandsciencewithinindustry,currentlycausingconcernandwhichisoverdueforattention.

No-onedoubtsthatweneedmorescientistsandinnovationtogiveusanedgeinanincreasinglycompetitiveworld.If

scientistsfeelthemselvesundervaluedandunder-used,workinginindustrialghettos,thatisnotapromisingaugury

forthefuture.Itseemswehavetoresolvethesemisapprehensionsbetweenscienceandindustry.Aboveall,wehave

tomakesurethatmanagementisnotitselfsmugaboutitsstatusandthatitdoesnotissuemissionstatementsabout

communicationwithoutrealizingthattheessenceofitisadialogue.Moreempowermentisrequiredandweshould
