(1)TheAttitudetowardsYourLife

Ifyourlifefeelslikeitislackingthepowerthatyouwantandthemotivationthatyouneed,sometimesallyouhavetodoisshiftyourpointofview.

Bytrainingyourthoughtstoconcentrateonthebrightsideofthings,youaremorelikelytohavetheincentivetofollowthroughonyourgoals.Youarelesslikelytobeheldbackbynegativeideasthatmightlimityourperformance.

Yourlifecanbeenhanced,andyourhappinessenriched,whenyouchoosetochangeyourperspective.Don'tleaveyourfuturetochance,orwaitforthingstogetbettermysteriouslyontheirown.Youmustgointhedirectionofyourhopesandaspirations.Begintobuildyourconfidence,andworkthroughproblemsratherthanavoidthem.Rememberthatpowerisnotnecessarilycontroloversituations,buttheabilitytodealwithwhatevercomesyourway.

Alwaysbelievethatgoodthingsarepossible,andrememberthatmistakescanbelessonsthatleadtodiscoveries.Takeyourfearandtransformitintotrust;learntoriseaboveanxietyanddoubt.Turnyour"worryhours"into"productivehours".Taketheenergythatyouhavewastedanddirectittowardeveryworthwhileeffortthatyoucanbeinvolvedin.Youwillseebeautifulthingshappenwhenyouallowyourselftoexperiencethejoysoflife.Youwillfindhappinesswhenyouadoptpositivethinkingintoyourdailyroutineandmakeitanimportantpartofyourworld.

(2)TheHappyDoor

Happinessislikeapebbledroppedintoapooltosetinmotionanever-wideningcircleofripples.AsStevensonhassaid,beinghappyisaduty.

Thereisnoexactdefinitionofthewordhappiness.Happypeoplearehappyforallsortsofreasons.Thekeyisnotwealthorphysicalwell-being,sincewefindbeggars,invalidsandso-calledfailures,whoareextremelyhappy.

Beinghappyisasortofunexpecteddividend.Butstayinghappyisanaccomplishment,atriumphofsoulandcharacter.Itisnotselfishtostriveforit.Itis,indeed,adutytoourselvesandothers.

Beingunhappyislikeaninfectiousdisease.Itcausespeopletoshrinkawayfromthesufferer.Hesoonfindshimselfalone,miserableandembittered.Thereis,however,acuresosimpleastoseem,atfirstglance,ridiculous;ifyoudon’tfeelhappy,pretendtobe!

Itworks.Beforelongyouwillfindthatinsteadofrepellingpeople,youattractthem.Youdiscoverhowdeeplyrewardingitistobethecenterofwiderandwidercirclesofgoodwill.

Thenthemake-believebecomesareality.Youpossessthesecretofpeaceofmind,andcanforgetyourselfinbeingofservicetoothers.

Beinghappy,onceitisrealizedasadutyandestablishedasahabit,opensdoorsintounimaginablegardensthrongedwithgratefulfriends.

(3)TheHiddenGold

Therewasonceafarmerwhohadafineoliveorchard.Hewasveryhard-working,andthefarmalwaysprosperedunderhiscare.Butheknewthathisthreesonsdespisedthefarmwork,andwereeagertomakewealth,throughadventure.

Whenthefarmerwasold,andfeltthathistimehadcometodie,hecalledthethreesonstohimandsaid,"Mysons,thereisapotofgoldhiddenintheoliveorchard.Digforit,ifyouwishit."

Thesonstriedtogethimtotelltheminwhatpartoftheorchardthegoldwashidden;buthewouldtellthemnothingmore.

Afterthefarmerwasdead,thesonswenttoworktofindthepotofgold;sincetheydidnotknowwherethehiding-placewas,theyagreedtobegininaline,atoneendoftheorchard,andtodiguntiloneofthemshouldfindthemoney.

Theyduguntiltheyhadturnedupthesoilfromoneendoftheorchardtotheother,roundthetree-rootsandbetweenthem.Butnopotofgoldwastobefound.Itseemedasifsomeonemusthavestolenit,orasifthefarmerhadbeenwanderinginhiswits.Thethreesonswerebitterlydisappointedtohavealltheirworkfornothing.

Thenextoliveseason,theolivetreesintheorchardboremorefruitthantheyhadevergiven;whenitwassold,itgavethesonsawholepotofgold.Andwhentheysawhowmuchmoneyhadcomefromtheorchard,theysuddenlyunderstoodwhatthewisefatherhadmeantwhenhesaid,"Thereisgoldhiddenintheorchard.Digforit,ifyouwishit."

(4)Youth

Youthisnotatimeoflife;itisastateofmind;itisnotamatterofrosycheeks,redlipsandsuppleknees;itisamatterofthewill,aqualityoftheimagination,avigoroftheemotions;itisthefreshnessofthedeepspringsoflife.

Youthmeansatemperamentalpredominanceofcourageovertimidityoftheappetite,foradventureovertheloveofease.Thisoftenexistsinamanof60morethanaboyof20.Nobodygrowsoldmerelybyanumberofyears.Wegrowoldbydesertingourideals.

Yearsmaywrinkletheskin,buttogiveupenthusiasmwrinklesthesoul.Worry,fear,self-distrustbowstheheartandturnsthespiritbacktodust.

Whether60or16,thereisineveryhumanbeing’sheartthelureofwonder,theunfailingchildlikeappetiteofwhat’snextandthejoyofthegameofliving.Inthecenterofyourheartandmyheartthereisawirelessstation:

solongasitreceivesmessagesofbeauty,hope,cheer,courageandpowerfrommenandfromtheInfinite,solongareyouyoung.

Whentheaerialsaredown,andyourspiritiscoveredwithsnowsofcynicismandtheiceofpessimism,thenyouaregrownold,evenat20,butaslongasyouraerialsareup,tocatchwavesofoptimism,thereishopeyoumaydieyoungat80.

(5)ThePowerofWords

Agroupoffrogsweretravelingthroughthewoods,andtwoofthemfellintoadeeppit.Whentheotherfrogssawhowdeepthepitwas,theytoldthetwofrogsthattheywereasgoodasdead.Thetwofrogsignoredthecommentsandtriedtojumpupoutofthepitwithalltheirmight.Theotherfrogskepttellingthemtostop,thattheywereasgoodasdead.Finally,oneofthefrogstookheedofwhattheotherfrogsweresayingandgaveup.Hefelldownanddied.

Theotherfrogcontinuedtojumpashardashecould.Onceagain,thecrowdoffrogsyelledathimtostopthepainandjustdie.Hejumpedevenharderandfinallymadeitout.Whenhegotout,theotherfrogssaid,"Didyounothearus?

"Thefrogexplainedtothemthathewasalittledeaf.

Hethoughttheywereencouraginghimtheentiretime.

Thisstoryteachesustwolessons:

1.Thereispoweroflifeanddeathinthetongue.Anencouragingwordtosomeonewhoisdowncanliftthemupandhelpthemmakeitthroughtheday.

2.Adestructivewordtosomeonewhoisdowncanbewhatittakestokillthem.

Becarefulofwhatyousay.Speaklifetothosewhocrossyourpath.Thepowerofwordsissometimeshardtounderstandthatanencouragingwordcangosuchalongway.

(6)ThePleasureofWalking

Walkinggivesusbackoursenses.Wesee,hear,smelltheworldaswenevercanwhenweride.Nomatterwhatvehicle,itisthevehiclethatismoving,notourselves.Wearetrappedinsideitsfixedenvironment,andoncewehavetakeninitssensoryaspects—mainlyintermsofcomfortordiscomfort—weturnoffourperceptionsandeithergotosleeporopenamagazineandbegindozingawake.

Butwhenwewalk,theenvironmentchangeseverymomentandoursensesarecontinuouslybeingalerted.Aroundeachcornerofacityblock,aroundeachbendinacountryroad,thereissomethingnewtogreettheeyes,theears,thenose.Eventhesamewalk,theonewemaytakeeveryday,isneverthesamefromonedaytoanother,fromoneweekandseasontoanother.

Thisistruenotonlyinthecountry,butanywhereatall.InNewYorkCity,agroupofexecutiveswhomeeteveryweekdaymorningwalkfromtheirhomestotheiroffices.Theirwaytakesthemthroughquietstreetsofoldbrownstones,oneoftheoldestneighborhoodsinthecity,thenupandovertheBrooklynBridgewithitscathedralarchessupportingtheweblikedraperyofcables,thendownintothetightskyscrapercanyonsofthefinancialdistrict.

Ontheirdailyroutetheysee,hear,smellthecityinallitsseasonalchanges,underbrightandcloudyskies.Onlythemostinclementweatherstopsthem—suitablydressed,theycanwalkwithpleasureinspringrains,autumndrizzles,thesunlightofasummermorningorasoftwintersnowfall.Theriverwatersrollbybelowtheirfeet,sullenorsparkling.Tugboatschugpast,shovingandhaulingtheirvariouslyladenbarges;onashroudedmorning,foghornshootandmoan.ThefamousskylineoflowerManhattanrisesbeforethem,glitteringinsun,afloatinmist,againstabackdropofskynevertwicethesame.

(7)Venice

Veniceisafascinatingcitybetweenseaandsky.Itisbuilton117islands.Therearen’tanycarsorbusesbecausetherearenohighwaysinVenice.Butithas150canalsand400bridges.Thenarrowstreets,withtheirhistoricnames,arepavedwithflagstones,buthavenofootpaths.Theyarelinedwithflower-deckedbalconies,Madonnas,shopsignsandlanterns.Artisans’stallsandpalacesstandsidebyside.Thesquaresarecharming.Thebrickbridges,withwhitestonetrimmings,arepitchedhightoallowbargestopassunderthem.

Everyyearthousandsoftouristsfromthefivecontinentsvisitthisbeautifulcity.Theyarealwaysamazedatthecharmofherwaterandpellucidlight,whichcanmakethemfreefromalldustandcooledbytheseabreezes.

Butbecausethelevelofthesurroundingwatersisconstantlyrising,theexceptionalpositionofVeniceconstitutesathreattoitsveryexistence.AndtheVenetianslovetheircityandwanttostaytheretosaveVenicefromthesea.Nowcariousmeasureshavealreadybeentakenandaplantosafeguardandremedythepositionisunderinvestigation.
