Thestalecoffeeisboilingupbuthecatchesitbeforeitgoesovertheside,poursitintoastainedcupandblowsontheblackliquid,letsapanelofthedreamslideforward.Ifhedoesnotforcehisattentiononit,itmightstoketheday,rewarmthatold,coldtimeonthemountainwhentheyownedtheworldandnothingseemedwrong.Thewindstrikesthetrailerlikealoadofdirtcomingoffadumptruck,eases,dies,leavesatemporarysilence.

Theywereraisedonsmall,poorranchesinoppositecornersofthestate,JackTwistinLightningFlatupontheMontanaborder,EnnisdelMarfromaroundSage,neartheUtahline,bothhighschooldropoutcountryboyswithnoprospects,broughtuptohardworkandprivation,bothrough-mannered,rough-spoken,inuredtothestoiclife.Ennis,rearedbyhisolderbrotherandsisteraftertheirparentsdroveofftheonlycurveonDeadHorseRoadleavingthemtwenty-fourdollarsincashandatwo-mortgageranch,appliedatagefourteenforahardshiplicensethatlethimmakethehour-longtripfromtheranchtothehighschool.Thepickupwasold,noheater,onewindshieldwiperandbadtires;whenthetransmissionwenttherewasnomoneytofixit.Hehadwantedtobeasophomore,feltthewordcarriedakindofdistinction,butthetruckbrokedownshortofit,pitchinghimdirectlyintoranchwork.

DuringthedayEnnislookedacrossagreatgulfandsometimessawJack,asmalldotmovingacrossahighmeadowasaninsectmovesacrossatablecloth;Jack,inhisdarkcamp,sawEnnisas
