Morerecently,onMay17,VancouverbecamethefirstmajorCanadiancitytoimposeastrawbaninrestaurants.Scotlandalsoplanstoberidofplasticstrawsby2019.IntheUS,theofficialsofMiami,Seattle,Davis,SanLouisObispo,andMalibuareimposingsimilarmeasuresbybanningtheuseofplasticstrawsinrestaurantsandcafes.

Manycompaniesarealsojoiningthefighttogetridofplasticwaste.Startingthismonth,all1,300USlocationsofMcDonaldshaveswitchedtopaperstrawsandwillonlyprovidethemtocustomersuponrequest.SanFrancisco-basedPizzaExpress,whichismovingtorecyclablestrawsbysummer2018,wasencouragedtomakethechangeafterreceivingaletterfromafive-year-oldcustomerrequestingthemtostopusingplasticones.

“I’malwayslookingatmebeingtheproblemandtheclothingasbeingOK,”saidKieranKern,whogetsaroundinawheelchair.WhenMs.KernapproachedOpenStyleLab,shewaslookingforacoatthatwouldbeeasytoputonwiththelimitationsofaweakerbody.Herteamcameupwithadesignwithacircularrod(杆)thatrunsthroughthecollarandallowsMs.Kerntoswingthecoatacrossherbackwithonehand.

“TheideaofhavingacoatthatseesthepartsthatmakemeasjustpartsandnotasaproblemthatIneedtosolvewasreallyliberatinginanidentitysense,”Ms.Kernsaid.“Becausegenerally,whenyouhaveadifferentbody,youdon’treallyseeyourself.”
