Actually,theplanet’shealthdependsonthesurvivalofcoralreefs.They’reoftendescribedasunderwaterrainforests,becausethey’reecosystemsthatprovidehabitatsforoneinfourofallmarinespecies.Thereefsalsoserveasbarriersthatprotectcoastlinesfromthefullforceofpowerfulstorms.Coralsareusedinmedicalresearchtofindouthowtotreatdiseaseslikecancer,etc.Inaddition,thereefsattracttourists,thefishingindustryandotherbusinesses,bringinginbillionsofdollarsofincome.
Coralsareanimalsthathavenobackbone,andlivemostlyintropicalwaters.Ariseofjust1to2degreesCelsius(1.8to3.6degreesFahrenheit)canhaveeffectsoncorals.Theycansurviveinthesehighertemperaturesonlyforafewmonths.Unfortunately,theproblemisn’tjustglobalwarming.Thereefshavealsobeenaffectedbypollution,coastaldevelopmentandoverfishing.
