Thestudy,publishedintheonlineissueoftheAmericanJournalofPreventiveMedicine,foundthatabout40,000patientsweretreatedinUSemergencydepartmentsforrockclimbingrelatedinjuriesbetween1991and2008.Themostcommontypesofrockclimbingrelatedinjurieswerefractures(骨折)andsprains(扭伤).Theanklewasthemostcommonbodyparttobeinjured(40percent).Climbersinthestudyrangedinagefrom2to74,withanaverageageof26.Thestudyalsofoundthatwomentookupaquarteroftheinjuries.

Fallsweretheprimaryreasonforinjurywithoverthreequartersoftheinjuriesoccurringastheresultofafall.Theseverityoffallrelatedinjurieshadalottodowiththeheightofthefall.Patientswhowereinjuredafterfallingfromaheightover20feetwere10timesmorelikelytobetreatedthanpatientswhowereinjuredfallingfrom20feetorlower.

“Wefoundthattheclimberswhofellfromheightshigherthan20feettookup70percentofthepatientstreatedforarockclimbingrelatedinjury,”explainedthestudyauthorLaraMcKenzie,PhD,directorattheCenterforInjuryResearchandPolicyatNationwideHospital.“Thistrend,combinedwiththefactthatrockclimbershaveahigherhospitalizationratethanothersportsandrecreationalinjuries,demonstratestheneedtoincreaseinjurypreventioneffortsforclimbers.”
