Inordertotestthetheory,thescientistsdidanexperimentonplants.Theygrewanumberofplantstotheageoffourweeks.Thentheytouchedthemwithapaintbrushevery12hoursovera36-hourperiod.

Theyfoundthatasaresponsetothetouch,themitochondria(线粒体)intheplantshadbeenpartlydestroyed.Themitochondria,asScienceAlertnoted,arethe“powerhouseofthecell(细胞)”.Themitochondriaproduceenergyfortherestofthecellinbothanimalsandplants.

Ifthis“powerhouse”isweakened,theplantswilllosealargeamountofenergythatshouldhavesupportedtheirgrowth.WhelanfurtherexplainedtoScienceDaily,“Ifthetouchingisrepeated,thenplantgrowthisreducedbyupto30percent.”

Althoughtheprocessdoeshaveastrongeffectonplants,usuallytheplantssurvive.Touchingchangestheplants,butit’snotnecessarilyabadchange.

AccordingtoScienceAlert,frequenttouchingormovingplantswillmakethemgrowshorterthanotherones.Theresearchersbelievethischange,insomeway,couldbehelpful.Itmayhelpplantsfightthreatstotheirhealthsuchasinsectsandbadweather.
