ForcenturiesAfricawasknownastheDarkContinent.Tradersandsailorswerefamiliarwithitscoastalregions,buttheareabeyondwaslargelyamystery.Thereweretalesoffabulouscreatures,lostcivilizationsandgreattreasurestobefoundbyanyonebraveenoughtoventureintotheinterior.

Throughoutthisvastcontinent,therewasnogreaterenigmathantheRiverNiger.Bythemid1700s,mostAfricanriverswereknowntoEuropeansbythepointatwhichtheyreachedthesea.Whatwasunknownwasexactlywheretheycamefrom.TheUpperNile,forexample,hadbeenknownsinceancienttimes,butitssourcewasonlydiscoveredamerehundredyearsago.

TheRiverNiger,however,wasanenigma,becauseitssourcewasalreadyknown,butwhathappenednexttothismassiveriver,oneofthelongestonearth,waspuzzling.

ThesourceoftheRiverNigerisactuallyquiteclosetotheAtlanticcoast,inhillswhichborderwhatisnowknownasSierraLeone.Forcenturies,itrannorthandeastandflowedintoasaltlake.AstheSaharaexpandedbetween4000and400BC,theriveraltereditscourseandjoinedtheQuorra,whichflowedsouthandeastfrommountainsinthecentralSaharaDeserttowardsthecoastinWestAfrica.TheQuorrahaslongsincedriedupandthepresentRiverNigerflowsinahuge,2600mileloopthroughoneofthedriestregionsofAfrica.SomeearlyEuropeanmapsshowedtheNigerflowingintothecentreofthecontinent.Onothermapsitjustseemedtodisappearintothedesert(as,infact,itdidatonetime).SomeshoweditflowingeastintoLakeChad,whilststillothersshoweditflowingwestintotheAtlantic.

In1788,theLondon-basedAfricanAssociationdecidedtosolvetheriddleandsentouttwoexpeditionsbutbythefollowingyear,neitherhadmademuchprogress.OneexpeditiononlywentasfarasCairo,whereitsleaderdied.Theotherexpeditionfailedtoo,havingreachednofurtherthanthecoastofLibya.Moresuccessfully,from1795to1797MungoPark,aScottishdoctor,exploredtheupperreachesoftheriverandestablishedbeyondalldoubtthattheriverranwesttoeastintotheheartofthecontinent.Parkbecameanationalheroandhissubsequentbookrecountinghisadventureshasscarcelybeenoutofprintsince1798.Yetthisdiscoveryonlyseemedtodeepenthemysteryofthismightyriver,sinceitsfinaldestinationwasstillunknown.

In1799,theGermanexplorer,FriedrichHornemann,travelledsouthfromTripoliinLibyaandfollowedtheNigereastandsouthasfarasKatsina,whichisinmoderndayNigeria.Hediedthere,hisfateonlydiscoveredsometwentyyearslaterbytheexplorersJosephRitchieandJohnLyon.ThenMungoParkreturnedin1804andnavigatedsome1500milesoftheriverasfarasBussabeforehewaskilledbylocaltribesmen.ItwasafurthertwentyyearsbeforeHughClappertonalsoreachedBussaandestablishedthefactssurroundingPark’sdeath,beforedyingtherehimself.Theseweredangeroustimesforexplorers.

GeneralopinionnowheldthattheriverranintotheBightofBenininWestAfrica,thecoastlineofwhichhadbeenfamiliartoEuropeansforhundredsofyears.Ariver,believedtobetheNiger,reachedthecoastamongstdensemangroveswamps,butthebreakingupoftheriverintonumerousdistributariesmadeitdifficulttoascertain.However,believingthatthiswastheNigerwasonething-provingitwasquiteanother.Therewerestillpeoplewhoheldalternativetheoriesontheprojectedcourseoftheriver.Forexample,secretarytotheBritishAdmiralty,JohnBarrow,thoughttheriverturnednorthagainandthereranintosponsoredthemissionwhichfinallydisprovedhisowntheory.

In1829,RichardLander,whohadtravelledtoAfricapreviouslyasClapperton’sservant,wasnowsentwithhisbrotherJohntofollowtheriverfromBussa.TheysucceededinreachingtheseanearthetownofBrassthefollowingyear,butwerecapturedbypirates.UnlikemanyoftheirpredecessorsinAfrica,however,theyescapedwiththeirlivesandreturnedtoBritainamidstmuchacclaimin1831withthenewsoftheirdiscoveryandaftersolong,themysteryoftheriver’sfinaldestinationwasfinallysolved.
